MM 126 Week #1

What about BOOKS? for MM 118 MM 126

Mr. M. doesn't REQUIRE a book in any of his classes, and hasn't for many years.

Mr. M. used to buy $1000 of books a year, now $300.... for things he is interested in.

He could recommend  a book if you are interested in buying one.

Mr. M. predicts in 2,000 years from now...
  Stardate: 4011
Colleges and Universities will move away from expensive printed text books...

As Sir Ken Robinson says in his book...
The rate of change in EDUCATION is glacial  (SLOOOOOOOOOOOW)

If Mr. M. wanted to impress you with....
        he would...

He may not instantly know the answers to many of your questions....
as we proceed without a text book.... but a wealth of excellent, step by step, online learning resources.

It can take Mr. M. hours to get an answer to your question... if he doesn't know the answer right away...
OR if it is new to him. He will often take the question home to work on.

Many students prefer having a book.

Is this "right" for first years? Mr. M. doesn't know.

The presentation is geared towards students trying to get into the industry, but the info is relevant to ALL creatives and creators.

Hi Nick

1- I wanted to say how truly excellent your
http://greyscalegorilla.com/blog/2009/02/presentation-how-to-be-creative-and-get-paid/
presentation was. Right on the money - I will show to all my students
as soon as they return to college.

2- Would you be able to give ONE bit of advice for my 1st years
students about how to succeed at college?

No problem if you are too busy.
Just wanted to say thanks for great presentation.

Welcome to Multimedia and Computer Fundamentals

Attendance -

  • What do your want Mr. M. to call you please.

Can I get 22/20 for attendance in MM 118?

Notes on Attendance:
- all students get a FREE missed class (So does Mr.M.)

- perfect attendance (without free one) +2% bonus - 22/20 (if no deductions)

- late is counted as not there, attendance taken at beginning of class

- if you know you will be away for good reason, discuss/email Mr.M. in
  advance.

   Miss 0 class -   22/20
   Miss 1 class -   20/20
   Miss 2 Classes - 18/20
   Miss 3 Classes - 15/20
   Miss 4 Classes - 12/20
   Miss 5 Classes - 5/20

(ie. this is TWO weeks missed)
   more than 5,      0/20

Good excuses include Dr. note/emergencies, and therefore no deduction.

Miss a quiz, and you will lose marks, and/or risk a zero on the quiz.

What do you think Mr. M. would say?
  • Can I work on my other classes in the Lab - while in MM 126?

Movie of the Week

OK...
So... at orientation you saw the proof that your mind can actually GROW braincells when you learn NEW activities like Juggling <- revolutionary discovery

Many of you made a good start on Juggling - and may have experienced a sensation of "training" your brain..

Sir Ken Robinson at ted.com -
Mozart said all babies are born artists - but they grow out of it...

and

Schools KILL creativity

Creativity should be as high on the list as basic literacy....

Warning
 - it could take weeks to learn how to juggle - but everyone here could do it

 - it could take years (like 3) to become a very creative person (if you are not already)
... but everyone here could become extremely creative.. but only with practise and a belief and confidence you could do it.

In the 1400 years that mankind has been juggling - no human being has ever been able to do it - if they didn't first believe they could juggle...

The Human Brain, or is it Mind...
is a funny, complex, largely misunderstood organ..

The brain has "Plasticity"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuroplasticity

It can change, grow, relocate functions... and finally, there is PROOF of this.

Let's do a few hands-on things RIGHT away in the lab - before Mr. M. talks too much ;)

Highlights

  1. Welcome!
  2. How is it going ehh?
  3. Basic stuff today... we will see how today goes, we don't want to have TOO much or TOO little to learn in 3 hours or in the first weeks.

Tip of the Day

  1. Remember - You are suppose to spend 6 hours this week in MM 126 - so if you feel there is too much in these 3 hours, you are right - try spending 3 more hours on the content, on your own, and you may  feel better - just ask Mr. M. for help after you put in the time.

Terms you gotta know

  1. ted.com (website)

  2. Widget  (on a Mac)

  3. Hot keys (Mac and PC)

  4. Dock (Mac)

  5. Finder  (Mac)

  6. What is a .zip file - why would you use one, why will we use one this week in MM 118? Do zip files work on Mac and PC Windows?

Creativity Corner

What about creativity? It makes you V______. It is likely the BIGGEST complement that you can receive in this business. - although complements like "hard worker", "team player", "nice to be around", "fun to be around", "artistic" and sometimes "really different" -  are also great things to work on - in the next 3 years

Creativity Video (19 minutes)

Ken Robinson says schools kill creativity

About Sir Ken Robinson

Why you should listen to him:

Why don't we get the best out of people? Sir Ken Robinson argues that it's because we've been educated to become good workers, rather than creative thinkers. Students with restless minds and bodies -- far from being cultivated for their energy and curiosity -- are ignored or even stigmatized, with terrible consequences. "We are educating people out of their creativity," Robinson says. It's a message with deep resonance. Robinson's TEDTalk has been distributed widely around the Web since its release in June 2006. The most popular words framing blog posts on his talk? "Everyone should watch this."

Creativity expert Sir Ken Robinson challenges the way we’re educating
our children. He champions a radical rethink of our school systems, to
cultivate creativity and acknowledge multiple types of.

REMINDER: Lab time is for MM work only, Yellow Cards and mark deductions will be issued for playing games or unrelated YouTube etc. - Please ask Mr. M. if you want to do something - If you have a game on your screen - you will be assumed to have been playing it.

Welcome to course!

  1. Third time Mr. M. has taught this course
  2. We will have mini-assignments
  3. Quizzes - yes... Reel, hopefully
  4. Attendance will count 20%  (see chart - same as MM 118)

REVIEW:

REVIEW The Yellow Card

No Games, No YouTube, ,No Face Book, no MSN, no Coffee paper cups, no food, no "entertainment" on Internet NOT related to course studies.
Do not disturb others, when Mr. M. is talking you are not talking.
Concentrate on LEARNING, not the dozens of distractions that will prevent YOU and likely people around you from learning.
 Very Important
Thanks for your cooperation.
Mr. M.

Course Goals
To be comfortable on a Mac and Windows and know the basics of Multimedia  (audio, video will be touched on).

There is NO sense learning all the advanced features of software and being able to "push many buttons" without a basic understanding and good foundation skills.

Not a memory course.... but at a job interview, there are some questions you should be able to answer without going to Google to try to find them.

Like,
How many bytes are there in a nice web page
What are common file formats, like .aiff, or .mp3, or .psd
How many Gigs does a DVD hold
What does HTML stand for
What is a dB?
What version of Mac Operating system is current. (HINT: We just got Snow Leopard on our Macs, and Windows 7 on PC)
and many other basic things we will cover in MM 126.

What does Mr. M. mean when he says:

Oh, that would be a critical interview question?

Like...
What is JavaScript

Note:

Take a 15 minute, and only 15 minute break at the ONE HOUR POINT of this 3 hour Lab - please remind Mr. M. if he forgets, don't take any longer - too disruptive to the class.

Your Own Learning Guide - A Google Document

What did Tyler say after working in MM industry in SS Marie - in his second year... summer job...
They could charge 10,000's of dollars for major websites.

Hey Mr. M. - you know the best thing you taught us in 1st year was:

_________________________

Questions:

Why is google docs like vegetables ?

Does Mr. M. "practice what he preaches" ?

Steps

  1. - You May have to do this from HOME -  VERY IMPORTANT  --
sign up for a google email account http://gmail.com

  2. - Sing-a-long,  - with person beside you...  creating and sharing a test document - see history and other features....-
OK, for 10% of your mark create a do this:

  1. Create a FOLDER on Google Docs  (Create New - Folder) - at top - call it EXACTLY this
    Mr. M. shared folder
  2. Create a NEW document with exactly this name

    MM 126 2011 What I learned - Joe Student
oops.. Mr. M. modfied name Sat, Sept 10, 2011...
please correct if you used OLD name, tx, Mr. M.
MUST BE EXACTLY that name - so copy and paste - and add your name instead of "Joe Student"

  3. Warning - if you don't call the folder and file exactly as above, marks are deducted. - 1 mark
  4. Return to Google document list
  5. Drag and drop that document to your shared folder

  6. Mr. M. to check it on his google doc.

You will be creating a Google Document where you summarize what you learn EVERY week on MM 126.

Practice what you preach?

How has google document helped Mr. M. learn video editing?

Question:
Do you know what Final Cut Pro is?

Question:
Did you see "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"

Action:
View Trailer
http://www.benjaminbutton.com/

Play 720p trailer at:
http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/thecuriouscaseofbenjaminbutton/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Cut_Pro#Major_films_edited_with_Final_Cut_Pro

Question:
What academy award did it win.

So, Mr. M. knows iMovie (free on a Mac), Final Cut Express ($200) and Final Cut Pro ($$$)...

but the cost of your software and how much your hardware costs has very little to do with the value of your work. It is all about the basics, skills, creativity and passion.

Mr. M. uses a Google Doc so he doesn't fall into the "Educational System Trap" of
"learn it and forget it" - which is so common throughout the system today at all levels, grade 1 - College - University.

Are you familiar with "Learn it and forget it" system of learning?

Here is some PROOF of what Mr. M. is saying:

From CNN.com
Of 707 eighth- and ninth-graders who took the California Standard test for general math: 1 percent tested advanced, 5 percent tested proficient and 94 percent failed by testing below grade level.
http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/09/07/chavis.education/index.html

So... please try to concentrate on the basics/fundamentals.. use Google Docs so you DON'T forget.

Lab Topic #1 - Get into WINDOWS

Pretend you are at home...

Let's do some basic HOT KEYS you may not know

Why use hot keys?
  1. Look like, and be a PRO
  2. Save time, a ton of time

DEMO

Windows side:

Do you know what
Alt-Tab does -- works in Mac too.
Try it out...

Hot keys
[Ctrl} +
z x c v f

Windows Key +
e m d l

The Right Mouse Button - hardly anyone knows that... but it is there for you to use

How do I remember all of this?
  1. Use them often
  2. Look at Edit Menu
  3. Write them in your google document (part of assignment, graded for course anyways)

Mac Users -

Smultron
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/development_tools/smultron.html

Lab Topic - Learning and Playing with Macs

Turn on computer
Turn OFF computer  (always log off first)
download the same MM 118 file, unzip it, open it, (don't have to email since will do that in WIndows)

The powerful search

Where are applications kept

Dock options/customize

After the Break

  1. get a gmail account
  2. share a document if we can
  3. create a what i learned document if we can
  4. BOOT windows
  5. Do hot keys in Word
  6. talk about file management
  7. create structure on cc-media
  8. Look at homework - that is enough for one sitting ;)

--------

What is File Management

Why bother?

Lets make a folder on the desktop for a say a video project that will be uploaded to YouTube and Facebook for a client.

What logical structure might it have?

Folder Name:

Year_Client_NameofProject

Why do it this way?
What is the right way?
Who decides?

What kind of assets  might go in there - what folder structure might you use.

Sound
Photoshop
FinalCut

Lab Topic # File Management - Best Practices: File Management for MM Program

What is cc-media ?

Instructions from Jim Voth - Sept 9, 2010
To access the cc-media or any other server from the windows side;

Just type in ‘//cc-media’ in the explorer window and login using your email address as username and your regular password.

On the mac side click on ‘go’ ‘connect to server’ then ‘cc-media’

How to use cc-media

  1. From FINDER on a Mac
  2. Go
  3. Connect to Server
  4. Type in:
     smb://cc-media/username

Then, if this works...

Start building a solid File System for All of you time here.

Mr. M. to DEMO

This is REQUIRED for your other courses

Please be EXACT in names and structure.

Then....

Thanks Richard Riddell for this

When working with computers it is important to keep your files organized. Setting up a logical directory structure to manage your files is key. The following example is how your directory structure should look on your cc-media (or other drive) after completing the program. File management skills can be used in any computing situation to keep your work organized.

IMPORTANT!
NOTE: this chart if for OLD courses...

DEMO by Mr. M. Best Practices - Directory Structure

Mr. M. insists for this exercise
  1. DO NOT PUT SPACES in your file names
  2. Use short names where possible

Why: The Internet Hates Spaces

You could have a file called

Hello World.doc   (a MS Word File)
the interent would say this was
Hello%20World.doc

See what I mean?

Also, on much of the Internet these are all separate files

Hello.htm
hello.htm
HELLO.htm

so... use lower case ONLY.

APPROVED for 2010
Let's use CAPs like Orion's email. and NO spaces...

Although CAPS on the internet are usually a sign of "lack of experience" in MrM view.

Here is the structure for YOUR cc-media folder
cc-media DRIVE
- this will count for MARKS in Sept and Dec!

- MUST BE PERFECT in every way, no files out of place etc. no folders other than shown at this level.

A couple of years ago... FYI...

All things GOOGLE - IF time permits - Mr. M. will DEOM
Try a the following:
  1. Google Drawing
  2. Google Document
  3. Google Presenation  (can you reveal objects as you present?)

HOME WORK

Be sure to have this done for next week

IMPORTANT:
Get an gmail account....
Become comfortable with Google Documents.

You could do all of this today, ask for help if needed.f

  1. On your home computer, install FireFox,  (ask Mr. M for help if needed)
  2. Check your college email
  3. Install NOTEPAD++ on your home computer - or smultron on your mac - or dreamweaver
  4. Try out the zipping and unzipping we did today
  5. Work on your Google Doc  and type in the stuff you are learning
  6. Have fun.
