Terms you gotta know...

Important terms you should know (i.e. with Googling them - like for a job interview, or verbal discussions)Terms:
|
Lecture TOPIC - Survey results
OK... you can judge for yourself... is the class learning the basics...
Mr. M. says... not too bad.....
But, if you have put ZERO time into the Open Source Audacity assignment (upgrade from 3/5)
and if you didn't put anything in your Google Doc...
it is unlikely you will recall anything from the bit of sound we did this week.
One never knows... maybe audio basics will be important to you sometime, somewhere.
Here are results (PRIVATE, names have been removed)
Lecture Topic: Need a Professional Voice for your Project? - Got $50?
Mr. M. hired Claire here.

Lecture Topic - Trying out CMS Open Source
This was in the Lab.
How much time did Mr. M. spend playing with this, and installing....
- 6 hours
It takes time to figure things out... don't expect 15 minutes of work to yield much (usually).
Mr. M. to demo

In particular

Get Simple (YOU HAVEN't scene this before)

Finally, show Mr. M. possible project:
http://jiffykeys.com (maybe a MM 400 or MM 462 project - or both )
WHY are we doing this again?
Mr. M. wants you to experience open source FREE - CMS's.
If you want to make money building websites as a freelancer, Mr. M. would suggest you have skills in:
- Prebuilts Blogger.com (Yes, people would pay to customize and train them, and maintain)
- Basic knowledge of a Javascript library (jQuery would be a good bet) - and of course .css and xTHML, and a little PHP, mySQL
- A light weight CMS - as Mr. M. has show the two
- Custom WordPress (but ONLY if clients demands are high)
- A heavier duty CMS, like Drupal (but only if you had BIG clients, like College, Bd of Ed etc) - since this takes more time and is complex for client too.
You might choose to specialize in only a few Open Source technologies.
Web development skills demand a knowledge of CMS now a days.
Case study: NoteHall.com - recall from the SHARKS TANK
The BIG Questions
How much would it cost you to build a
http://notehall.com
Mr. M. would estimate
- One week, couple programmers, one designer
- Then one month to test
Would you agree?
The VALUE on the Internet is no longer in the technology or software?
It is about creativity, marketing, open source, ideas and something called "critical mass"
Recall from last year
http://www.jaiku.com/
What is that
See:
http://code.google.com/p/jaikuengine/
So.... The "Value" of twitter just can't be in the software?
by Michael Arrington on January 24, 2009
Twitter, which just recently turned down a half billion dollar acquisition offer from Facebook
A unusual world you guys will be working in? - The "Bits" economy?
So... where do you think the value lies in the "Bits" economy?
Are they using a FREE concept?
http://www.notehall.com/student/register
What technology are they using?
Mr. M. thinks it is a framework (Open Source) because of the short URL's and how frameworks work.
Who built their site?
jQuery? - check out the source
From their Home page:
Intrigo is an (open source) web application house. Our development philosophy is simple: maximum transparency throughout short, well focused, development iterations.
This is curious?
What do they mean by "from scratch" in their home page?
"We precisely engineer web applications from scratch to our client’s exact needs. While we’re experts in PHP + Zend and MySQL, "
Mr. M. thinks this is the NEW definition of "from scratch" - no way they wrote jQuery from scratch etc.
OK... OK.. but surely EXPERTS in PHP/mySQL would write their own company Blog from "scratch" wouldn't they?
ANSWER:
http://intrigo.com/blog/
Q:
Why wouldn't they?
A:
NP.
http://intrigo.com/process
"Gone are the days of huge chunks of cash followed by months of intangible development. "
From their page:
Technologies used: PHP + Zend Framework, MySQL, Authorize.net
eCommerce tip:
You likely want to sub out your ecommerce needs to companies like http://authorize.net - Mr. M. could tell you more if you wish.
The company that designed notehall.com was in the same city as the owners?
Maybe an Case Study is easier to understand?
Where is the REAL value now days, in a bits economy, in an Open Source world?
Consider
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
How much would it cost you to create your OWN similar site?
Could you have it up and running by midnight tonight?
Has Mr. M. every made one? Why?
So...
If you wanted to make some money on a "wikipedia" like site (featuring PAID content) - how much in your budget would you allow for hardware, software, hosting, programming?

Seems strange doesn't it?
