Tip of the Day

Mr. M. was talking to Cory about Resume... and how you will add
- Publications
- Open Source Contributions
(as required by Mr. M.)

Cory used a great phrase:
"Achievement-based" resume....

Mr.M. really liked that... as a matter of fact, the rest of your resume isn't all that impressive - employers want to know specifically what you achieved...

A long list of software, education etc.. is interesting, but in no way stands out.

What can we learn from Shark Tanks - Dragon's Dens

On Saturday, Mr. M. watched Dragons Den, and the entrepreneurs were awful. And judges seemed harsh, even impolite.... and not civil.

Say, you have no interest in being a freelancer, or a small business owner, or "reality tv":)  ---
but there is something we all can learn from these shows....

What is that?

(it could be video editing - Shark Tank is way higher production than Dragon's Den)

Mr. M. liked the "College guys notehall.com"
- a blend of not being arrogant, but confident, but also vulnerable - with nice personality..

THE BIGGEST of Questions...

Mr. M. did mention this earlier - do you recall?

What is the ONLY reason, you will be able to be employed in a PRIVATE  Multimedia related company?

(this is a for profit, not public sector employment)

Small Business in Ontario

Your Guide to Small Business is designed to give entrepreneurs the tools they need to succeed. It’s not a “how to” book; it’s an information resource that will help identify the things one needs to do before, during and after launching a business.

Broken Link FIXED!

http://www.ontario.ca/en/business/STEL02_038762.html

 Topics today:

  1. What kind of business are there in Ontario (main types) - Sole Proprietorship, Partnership, Corporation

  2. What type would I be as a freelancer?

  3. What kind of company is RPC - what was MoneyTree Software Company - write on board.

  4. Explain types - taxes / risks etc. - DRAW ON BOARD

  5. How much does it cost?

  6. I want to open a bank account - what will BANK say

  7. I want a GST number / PST number?  -- NOW HST in Ontario...

BREAKING NEWS.... SharkTank UPDATE  (6 minutes)

Mr. M. asked you how much YOU would invest in the Elephant business idea?

The elephant lady seemed very nice, even relaxed - honest...

Q: the Lady shark, really was a tough business person, do you agree?

Mr. M. thought about it...
  1. There was NO patent
  2. It could be easily copied
  3. Just didn't seem like that good of an idea
  4. Where is the Market for this?
Mr. M. concluded he would invest  $______
in this very nice lady.

The LESSON we can learn from her, is
GET people  (investors, employers, retailers, wholesalers to WANT to work with you)
http://abcnews.go.com/Business/video/turning-idea-success-10066180

How would YOU like to make $1,000,000

What if you proposed this idea to Mr. M. - or to any teacher...

It is so easy for Mr. M. to say...
it was a great idea... but that is with hindsight...

Mr. M. might have said..
OK, go for it... but wonder who would pay for a pixel.

From the
Wish I thought of that department.

What made this person successful?

  1. Was it his skills?
  2. His knowledge of using the latest version of high end expensive software?
  3. Was it a $14,000 computer?

Like the elephant lady...
Mr. M. thinks it was about their story... their personality... and that people
WANT them to succeed.

Funny...  how sometime simple ideas can work well.

just sell adds by the Pixel?

CHECK OUT THE GREAT ADVICE HE GIVES HERE:

http://www.entrepreneur.com/worklife/successstories/article82936.html

How did he come up with idea:

So anyway, after an hour of two of jotting random things on paper, the idea seemingly popped out of nowhere. Almost like my subconscious mind had been ticking over in the background, working it all out. So it just kind of happened. That's about it. I scribbled it down and within about 10 minutes a picture of what needed to be done had emerged.

Movie of the Week

Lab

Highlights

  1. Busy Lab, various topics
  2. Start your Major project submission for before March Break

Lab Topic: NDA - and agreements

Review from last week

  • You know what a "release form" for video or photograph is - Right?

  • Do you know what a NDA is? or a NC (non-compete) form is? Frantic Films, Eugene - what are you working on?

Don't feel you HAVE to sign anything, don't be bullied.

    Sometimes you have to.

  • Who ever "authors" a form has a tremendous advantage. You are always better to author any agreement.

  • Your business and success might just depend on how well (and how legally) you do things.

  • Forms are needed for locations, actors, music, narration, any (c), and much much more.

  • If you had someone draw something for you for a project, exactly who owns what they drew? You better decide on this before the big success, or you are likely to have big problems.

  • Tell Adam Behr story about his art on website... http://adambehr.com

  • "I don't have to worry, we are good friends" - Good agreements make good friends (so do good fences make good neighbors)

  • OK, for your Google Document What I learned- add this procedure to it (with Logo)

  • Some BIG questions:
  1. Why use it?
  2. Does it save time?
  3. Mr. M. examples
  4. Could it be done by FAX with echosign.com ?
  5. Is it legal?
  6. What about the "Supreme Court of Canada"? Do they say it is OK? Can you prove it?
  7. Which President of US signed a bill making digital signatures LEGAL
  8. Is it FREE

Lab Topic: You RESUME in your What I learned document

MM 462 (and MM 400) should offer you something to put on your resume..

It is on the list of what you should have in WIL Doc.

If time is too short, then work on during SUMMER

Required...

Put a SCREEN SHOT  (or make it a pure google doc) - of your resume as it now stands.

This week's movie:

Why is equity like sh**

Five BIGGEST Makes

THIS IS REQUIRED (for marks) in your WIL  What I learned, and is listed in WIL Requirements
