Review

What do you recall from last week?

Signoff... what does it mean

You saw this in the FALL

DB GILLES

Professor
New York University
Tisch School of Arts

Mr. M. colleague says it best in his book:

In the tech world, there is a widely known, comically named behavior that takes over many a novice with they get into technology related arts.

It's said they get:
 GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome.

The inexperienced think the more they buy, the more advanced the technology they have, the more amazing their work will be.

It doesn't work that way.

More gadgets and gizmos usually become a huge distraction.

Novices may try to "buy" a sense of artistic accomplishment by getting all the glitzy stuff available them, but it seldom works,
because art is never about the technology.

Employers will look for the raw talent and whether it's there or not.

Fortunately, talent is NOT a function of money.

~ Quote from DB Gilles BOOK.

Its a website that makes websites for businesses really cheap I think I didn't really look into it.

Terms you gotta know...

Important terms you should know (i.e. with Googling them - like for a job interview, or verbal discussions)

Terms:

  1. HTML Boiler Plate
  2. Best Investment you can make in yourself...

Mr. M. Forgot to cover

YouTube Video

Look at LAST week, you missed a few things

Mr. M. to do $1000 website assignment -- why would that  be??

Have you seen:

http://www.sandfantasy.com/

After the lecture in the Fall, in MM 118  Mr. M. asked Kevin Element (professional web designer, Bachelor of Art degree, has and STILL works in industry as web designer)

Mr. M. values "professional" opinions - of people that are actively working in industry and have been PAID

Mr. M. has been building websites since 1995, and has owned 50 domain names, but his company has ONLY done $25,000 worth of web design for clients...

ReadPlease Corporation (his company) chooses to focus on developing and selling software....  about $1_____ worth since 1995.

Remember, in MM "everyone is an expert"   <-- a source of frustration....

He asked Kevin to name 3 things he liked about the Sand Art site:
1
2
3

Kevin said:
-
and highlighted some serious and basic design flaws.

http://www.sandfantasy.com/

Mr. M. has suggested to all teachers, to DO every assignment, to check the "work load" required.

Mr. M. sometimes forgets, how LONG and how much TIME he had to put in to learn things... especially the basics.

Generally if Mr. M. can do this assignment in say 3 hours....
it might take a student who is brand NEW to this, about three times that much ( 9 hours) to get a "B" grade.

If the student had to do another identical assignment, it would be much much faster.

Proof of the Pudding - Practice What you Preach.

Message:

Don't be impressed with expensive hardware, equipment and software...

Coming to a Lecture Theatre near you - January 21, 2012

AFTER reading DB's Book....

Five years ago,

Mr. M. entered a world-wide video contest for a 30 second video and came first and WON 1st Place --- $3,000 USD.

This lead him to work for a video production company in Ottawa for 1 year, as a freelancer.

Details:

Time to think of concept: 7 weeks

Time to learn: large amount of time

Camera: $159.

Storyboards: 9+ pages

Software: iMovie (free with Mac),  Audacity (free)

Lighting: DIY - Do it yourself

Music: http://icompositions.com  Creative Commons

Footage: 1 hour 15 minutes

Finished product 30 seconds.

Time taken:      a ton.

Since then, Mr. M. has learned a great deal and is currently focusing on the BASICS of audio and photography.

Mr. M. says, for a  well conceived 30 second clip

will take him    100 hours, likely MORE.  But great fun,

and the most Mr. M. ever got for a 30 second broadcast TV commercial was $1,400...

but that is still $14.00 per hour for doing something fun... on the side... and learning a whole lot...

Big companies will pay $100,000's or much more... for a good 30 second TV ad.

Show 2nd Place

Parents Control Guidance   $1,000 WINNER...
What did Mr. M. learn from the guy...

More about technology, hardware, equipment - GAS  - Video 9 minutes

This looks like it is about VIDEO - but it isn't really.

While MANY are impressed with the latest most expensive,
greatest cameras, hardware, software... Mr. M. is not....

This video drives home this point....

Usually GAS is a symptom of amateurs...
