Look at LAST week, you missed a few things
Mr. M. to do $1000 website assignment -- why would that be??
Have you seen:
http://www.sandfantasy.com/
After the lecture in the Fall, in MM 118 Mr. M. asked Kevin Element (professional web designer, Bachelor of Art degree, has and STILL works in industry as web designer)
Mr. M. values "professional" opinions - of people that are actively working in industry and have been PAID
Mr. M. has been building websites since 1995, and has owned 50 domain names, but his company has ONLY done $25,000 worth of web design for clients...
ReadPlease Corporation (his company) chooses to focus on developing and selling software.... about $1_____ worth since 1995.
Remember, in MM "everyone is an expert" <-- a source of frustration....
He asked Kevin to name 3 things he liked about the Sand Art site:

Kevin said:

and highlighted some serious and basic design flaws.

Mr. M. has suggested to all teachers, to DO every assignment, to check the "work load" required.
Mr. M. sometimes forgets, how LONG and how much TIME he had to put in to learn things... especially the basics.
Generally if Mr. M. can do this assignment in say 3 hours....
it might take a student who is brand NEW to this, about three times that much ( 9 hours) to get a "B" grade.
If the student had to do another identical assignment, it would be much much faster.

AFTER reading DB's Book....
Five years ago,
Mr. M. entered a world-wide video contest for a 30 second video and came first and WON 1st Place --- $3,000 USD.
This lead him to work for a video production company in Ottawa for 1 year, as a freelancer.
Details:
Time to think of concept: 7 weeks
Time to learn: large amount of time
Camera: $159.
Storyboards: 9+ pages
Software: iMovie (free with Mac), Audacity (free)
Lighting: DIY - Do it yourself
Music: http://icompositions.com Creative Commons
Footage: 1 hour 15 minutes
Finished product 30 seconds.
Time taken: a ton.
Since then, Mr. M. has learned a great deal and is currently focusing on the BASICS of audio and photography.
Mr. M. says, for a well conceived 30 second clip
will take him 100 hours, likely MORE. But great fun,
and the most Mr. M. ever got for a 30 second broadcast TV commercial was $1,400...
but that is still $14.00 per hour for doing something fun... on the side... and learning a whole lot...
Big companies will pay $100,000's or much more... for a good 30 second TV ad.
Show 2nd Place
Parents Control Guidance $1,000 WINNER...What did Mr. M. learn from the guy...
More about technology, hardware, equipment - GAS - Video 9 minutes
This looks like it is about VIDEO - but it isn't really. While MANY are impressed with the latest most expensive,
greatest cameras, hardware, software... Mr. M. is not....
This video drives home this point....
Usually GAS is a symptom of amateurs...
