About MM 218

  1. Show Course Outline
  2. Show plan of attack
  3. Talk about Reel Art Show - Mobile - Machinarium Edition

General Comments:

Mr. M. still working on what assignments would best prepare you for employment.

Mr. M. will try to stay focused on what will help you

What happened to the FLASH?

Once, we taught Adobe Flex  (create flash sites)

Now,

there is NO Flash in MM 218 - for and last year.

Is Flash ?

What did Steve Job's letter say?

iPhone, iPad NO Flash..

Android, yes, Flash

What did http://www.itworldcanada.com say about flash -

Everyone is an expert, but this is MrM opinion.

He works in industry, this is an informed opinion.

Mr. M. is generally interested in Open Source solutions... that is the future.

Many, live in the past... even some employers of MM grads..

Course Goal:

"Have nobody quit or fail" - let's try. But without effort or interest, some will not make it.

Fun, exciting, stress free?

Mr. M. will do his best to maintain the 3+3 rule  ( 3 hour + 3 hour)

(this is a MM program rule that says you should be able to pass any course by putting in 3 hour in class and 3 hours outside of class - and has been agreed to by all teachers and the Dean)

For majority of students...
Learning doesn't happen when we overload students beyond a reasonable level.

Learning remains a "slow process" - and you just gotta know the basics - and that takes time.

Important NOTES and CONDITIONS:

Update:
If you miss more than ONE or TWO classes, with a good excuses, some consideration may be given.

However:
Example.
Student emailed Mr. M. 8 times with "good" excuse which include
- sick
- car trouble
- have to work on other teachers enormous assignments (this is NOT a good reason)
- slept in (again, NOT a good reason)
- family issues
- other serious problems likely beyond students control

So, even though Mr. M. has 8 emails from the student, the student can't expect to get the same
mark as a student with near perfect attendance who has worked extremely hard, and taken the course extremely seriously.

Depending on circumstances and nature of "good excuses" this student may expect  about  5  or 10  out of 20...

Note On Catastrophic Excuses.

Prolong sickness, death in family and other terrible important and tragic events...
Mr. M. will help you as much as he can, and hopefully you can pass.
Consideration will be given
Hopefully, the attendance mark will NOT cause the student to lose their year.

Mr. M. was very ill at Queens University, and go the lowest mark possible on 2 courses, but it did NOT cost him a year of Engineering.
He was always thankful for that... and never expected anything more than the LOWEST mark possible which was ___ %.

Notes:
  • Attendance is taken at very beginning of class
  • Late is counted as absent.
  • Attendance is also made up of professionalism, contributing to course etc.
Grading - counts 20% of your grade:

  • 22/20 - if you have perfect attendance - only if you attend every class.
  • 20/20 - if you only miss one
  • Deduct 2.5 for each class missed.
  • Examples,
    miss 5 classes, you use up 1 free one, then deduct 4 x 2.5 = 10 marks - your attendance mark= 10/20.
    miss 9 classes, you use up 1 free one, then deduct 8 x 2.5 = 20 marks -  your attendance mark =  0/20.

Preliminary thoughts

It is still early, Mr. M. hasn't decided, he finds new things all the time...

  1. $1,000 Web site
  2. Mobile Web site
  3. One week to control your Sketchup with JS/HTML
  4. Maybe 1 week in amazing WordPress
  5. Your Portfolio Reel

Did you enjoy NodeBox - Python?

Did anyone try NodeBox 2 -
this is where programming is going... many don't see this yet.

Reel Art Show 2012 - An Machinarium Story

Careful about copyright ?
MM 400 is about copyright...

http://machinarium.net/demo/  See Link on Left Side for email from guy

See the Link on left side.

Are you a PRO web designer.

Do you know? Look at SOURCE code:
http://www.tomsplanner.com/gantt-chart/aboutus.aspx

If you don't know what the IE conditional is... then you are not a pro web designer.

Mr. M. will show you, how to be a pro, not in months or years... but in weeks, by using things like
BoilerPlate template

More on that in weeks ahead.

There is a "myth" with amateur web programmers...
that you "build your own templates from scratch"
Mr. M. says...
The opposite is true...

Mr M will show you later, how a student started with boilerplate,
customized, made it his own, used knowledge learned in 1st year.
This is how pros do it...
You don't have 1,000 hour, or the expertise to attempt it any other way.

If
TIME did NOT = Money...
then it would be different.
or
if you had  a spare 1,000 hours, that would be different too.

"Everyone is an expert in MM"  :)

Lab

Highlights

- Introduction to Python.
- getting your domain name and hostsing for next week.

  1. Create a Google Doc called:
    MM 218 2012 - What I Learned in MM 218 - Joe Q. Student

  2. Drag it to Mr. M. Shared Folder

BIG QUESTION:- How do I upgrade from 3/5 to 4/5 or 5/5?

Generally, 4/5 would be if you spent about 3 hours OUTSIDE of Lab time
5/5 - if you spen say 6 hours.

Note:
To prove this, and convince MrM... just put the evidence in your
What I Learned Document. *screenshots, notes,
and maybe SHOW Mr.M. as well

A Domain Name for you

In next week, submit your domain name to Mr. M. via this form:

NOTE:
Please include the .info, in your response - as stated a FEW time.

I've invited you to fill out the form A Domain Name for YOU.. To fill it out, visit:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dDBWR0VGUFc3YlNTTld0QVB5MlBRbEE6MQ

Take a few days...

TIP
- dashes are terrible in domain names
- .com is the KING
-. net don't pick - why?
- Don't use numbers like - unless you have a great reason.

TIP:
What high end programming language is MrM using for this form?

Action:

You must check if your domain is available at
http://godaddy.com

The college will BUY you a .info and provide you with FREE hosting.

What is .nu  - why was that so popular in Sweden when Mr. M. attended
http://www.stockholmchallenge.org/

His software was a finalist and was invited to attend by Stockholm government.

What did the the Chief Information Officer of the European union say..
about a piano... and technology
