Reading Block

Once again this year the students at Humphrey Elementary will be taking apart in a parallel reading block.  During block teachers and students get a chance to break down in more depth what they are reading. We stop to reinforce concepts such as reading fluency, story setting, comprehension and main idea.

 

Writer’s Work Shop

The second component to the parallel reading block is writing.  I will be introducing writers work shop to the students.  It is a program that models what good writers do when they write.  There are “mini lesson” that demonstrate what the students should be trying to do when writing.

 

Math

The math curriculum in second grade focuses in on addition and subtraction.  We will be starting out with single digit problems and be working our way towards 2 and 3 digit problems.  Along the way we will be introducing the students to new strategies and techniques in how to go about solving these problems.

 

Social

This year will have a new social studies curriculum. It consists of five smaller text books instead of one larger one.  The first book introduces communities.  We will be talking about what makes up a community and how they get along.  We will also explore different types and sizes of communities, along with discussing how and why they are different.
