There are many Tapovans. The Tapovan referred to in this page is near Gaumukh. Many of us have heard of Gaumukh as the source of river Ganga. Gaumukh is one face of the Gangotri glacier which apparently is about 30Kms long and about 2Km wide (Reference). The trek starts form Gangotri which is reachable by road from Uttarkashi via the beautiful village called Harshil. Gangotri is a popular pilgrimage spot and is one of the "Char Dhams". The trek to Gaumukh is not very tedious and many finish the trek in one or two days. The stretch to Gaumukh is about 18 Kms. Most of the trekkers are devout pilgrims but there are many fun seeking trekkers as well. The entire stretch is dotted by make-shift rest houses during the peak season. Food, tea and a place to sleep is easily available.
