What the blog?

6/30/2011  Hey, thanks!

After updating the website, I've received a lot of positive feedback for the layout.  Glad to hear everyone likes it. I'm very happy that some music that I've been a part of finally exists in an enjoyable format.

Taken more to heart, several friends have sent very nice words about some of the tracks on Another Seven Tracks.  When I first posted that collection of songs, I didn't really make a big to-do of it.  It was more of a personal accomplishment to finally immortalize some thoughts that were in my head at the time.  Though much of it is very personal (and plenty subjective), I did consider it a sort of an unmailed letter to my close friends and family.  I guess most of them didn't even know it was there until just the other day.

Since restructuring the site, comments like "pointless and broke are ridiculously good", "Broke is a really beautiful song",  and "The 'Another seven tracks' sounds great and makes me want to make music" have humbled me greatly.  Moreover, it's really struck me that people may have recently established a connection to these pieces that I've felt for years.  The ability to share that connection is all I've ever really wanted to do with music, in performance or in recorded works.

Keeps me motivated and excited to create again.  Thanks guys!

6/28/2011  www.DaveHughesMusic.com

I finally got around to giving the website a much-needed fresh look.  Wix has proven to be a much more useful free device than googlepages/googlesites, at least for doing whatever it is that I'm doing.  Heck, I might even pay them to take down the "Wix" links on the top right and bottom.  No time soon though.

In time, I'll have links to purchase the individual tracks.  Yes, "purchase".  Chances are, if you're one of the half dozen or so people reading this, you already have a copy of the mp3s you want.  If not, get them by using the navigation pane on
the right.  Ambitiously, I hope to have CDs (complete with artwork) of each of the EPs I feature here.  Those would be sold at $3 or $4 each.  The mp3s will likely run the average iTunes rate (more pricey), though I'd rather not use iTunes or Amazon.  I'll get that figured out, but I'm not at that point yet.

Also, I ditched the googleads I put up half a year ago because nothing but tackiness came from that.

Finally, with the help of Ken, I'm recording again.  Little new stuff and a spattering of old stuff.  There will be music.

12/30/2010 Dave Hughes Music

Whoever it was that owned this domain since I allowed it to expire has made the same mistake.  I think I'll do away with davetime.net and stick with davehughesmusic.com.

Speaking of Dave Hughes domain names, check out the asshole who has DaveHughes.com.  Isn't that what Facebook is for?

12/29/10  Flash and Ads?

I'm actually not to sure about using ads one here.  I just sort of threw them on there when I was adding ads to the temporary websites  I'm holding to sell (TriTipBBQ.com and SantaMariaTriTip.com).

As for the flash website, I think that's going to stay.

Nothing new to share, musically.

3/24/10  More Silly Tracks

So I figure I might as well post some more ridiculous songs as well as half-written pieces that won't get finished - if for no other reason, so that I have them all in one place.

Scott's Lunch is a ridiculous song about Scott Shute going on his lunch break at the Radisson Hotel Santa Maria.  It's sort of become his theme song sometime in the last three years.

Treadmill Song is something I started last year after getting sick of the same couple of albums that I listened to while doing cardio.  I don't see this going anywhere.  It's not quite silly, and not that good.  I like the bassline a good deal.

Me and My Buddy in the Outback is a completely ridiculous song written mostly by Zachary Ontiveros with some damage control by Ken Lyon and Myself.  No surprise that I'm on music and Ken's on noises.

3/22/10  Some Dated Silly TracksTongue-in-cheek tracks from a couple years ago.  Russ, Kathy, and I had such a good time recording a song for Tim's birthday in 2008, that we recorded 4 more tracks the next day.  Guess I should put them up.  Here's the breakdown:

  • Million Bucks (Kathy, Russ) I'm on piano and chorus harmony, Russ on everything else, kathy on vocals too
  • Breakfast (Kathy, Dave) me
  • Spider on the Wall (Kathy, Russ) I'm on drums and fake vibes, Russ on everything else, kathy on weird vocals
  • Forget it (Dave) me
  • Tim Skunk (Kathy, Dave, Russ) I'm on drums, Russ on Bass, Kathy on bitchin lead and rhythm guitar, everybody on vocals

3/18/10  Completed EP Collaboration!

I've recently had the pleasure of working with my good friends Ken and Tony in making music for the first time in years.  This was very different than previous music-making experiences for a number of reasons.  Firstly, it was done in 3 different cities at the same time.  Secondly, we finally were able to execute the *Clean Cup concept of music-making for the first time.  Thirdly, we tapped into our love of our good friend Joel as our motivation.  And finally, it's some weird instrumental sudo-ambient experimental stuff that we all find enjoyable.

*The Clean Cup concept is when one person creates a piece (ideally minimal) and passes it off to the next person who adds to it, and then off to the next person who (in the case of a trio) adds the finishing touches.  The name comes from the Alice in Wonderland quote "Clean cup, move down!"

On this EP, each possible direction of workflow was explored, as indicated by each track name. This resulted in what I believe to be very different pieces.  The final track is something Joel used to play on the piano - or at least how I remembered it.

All tracks are available for download here.

All artwork was done by Tony and Ken.  Big Thanks to Pringle for allowing us usage of his FTP site.  Looking forward to working with these guys again soon.

3/16/10  Oh Yeah, I Have a Website

Spring is here again and that's awesome.  I don't think I'm as much of a blogger as I previously thought.  In fact, I was always in doubt that this was a blog in the first place.  "I don't blog - no sir, I have a website!"  No, in reality, it's a damn blog.

That said, I'll hang on to this thing just as a way of sharing and explaining half written ideas, ridiculous songs, or tasters of future work.  So I guess I'm saying I'll just keep doing what I'm doing as slowly as I'm doing it...for now.  But I think I'm over the ego-maniacal concept of blogetry.  I mean, just look at that picture of me!  Why did I think that was good idea?

The site will be changing soon.  It will be displaying links to completed EPs that I've either done or been a part of.  I'll leave the link up to this "blog" for the time being, but I don't think it's something that will prove very useful to myself or anyone who ever checks here.

4/5/09  Help Me Roll Away the Stone

Spring is here.  I saw a lizard soaking in the sun yesterday on my deck.  I named him "Biff", and I don't know that I'll see him again.  That's okay.

I've been on an early Pink Floyd kick lately.  There was a brief part of this band's career where it seemed they had no idea what they were doing.  They hadn't shaken the sound that formed them, and hadn't yet formed the sound that made them what they are known for. In the mean time, they'd just make nice songs.  I had this one simple song in my head and took a crack it it.

This was before the bad taste in my mouth morphed into something bigger and more painful.  "Sadness passes in a while".  And now spring is here.  Few things make me this happy.

3/31/09  Speechless

I have a bad taste in my mouth.  I'm sure it will pass.

Here's a song I made a while ago that is supposed to sound like the feeling of falling forever after the fear subsides.  It was made with bass, ebow on electric guitar, and some keyboard voice I don't recall.  Hopefully it will become part of something larger, specifically, my fresh attempt at a pseudo-ambient album.  But I suck at finishing things.

11/25/08  Do You Want Some Breakfast?

Sometimes my job is boring.  This is something I did when I had free time a few months ago.  The song itself was written and recorded in El Cerrito with help from Kathy and Russ, respectively. Scroll to the bottom of this page to see...

11/15/08  Leftovers

Since I'm finally sharing stuff I've been working on again, I thought it only made sense to post some quality stuff that didn't ever go anywhere.  So, here's the first of several leftover tracks to be posted.

Hallelujah 2006 is how the sixth track of Another Seven Tracks was supposed to sound like.  I guess I couldn't get over the fake drums.  It's very, very different than the somber acoustic one I posted a month ago.  I'm not sure which way sounds better...

Spent (and Livestock) is pretty much part of what I sent Scott from SF when we were trying to figure out how to play the 2004 songs live for our friends om 10/10/05.  This single-mic, heavily reverberated recording is the only one of Spent that I have posted.  Livestock might the most collaborative of the 2004 tracks, and hearing what it sounds like when only one of us is doing it is, well, interesting...I guess.   Forgive the white noise, the missed vocal notes, and the lack of Scott.

10/27/08  What was that?

One more thing about Another Seven Tracks.  I'm aware of the imperfections in sound quality and not overly concerned.  After wrestling with some of these songs for a couple years now, I thought it wiser to wrap up some loose ends and call 'em done.  This mindset allowed for occasionally recording guitar and vocals with the same mic at the same time, not compressing the guitar, bass, or vocals from time to time, a weird ticking sound in one song, and not "mastering" anything.  Oh well, I hope you can still enjoy them.

10/26/08  One Post a Year?

I better make it a good one.  How about an album?  I guess it's an album.  Or is it an e.p?  Either way, I'm going to call this collection of songs done.

Four years after working with Scott and putting out
those other 7 tracks, I offer out the familiar sounds of Another Seven Tracks.  Like our old e.p. it's just over 20 minutes.

Happy Birthday Jennifer Hughes.   Happy late birthday to those mentioned below and to my father.  and obviously, happy late 10/10 to all!
