General Art Syllabus

Prep Work

Prep work is done during the first eight (8) minutes of class, every day. This time is set aside for students to work on homework and can be utilized to research or create drawings and to research information for or create blog entries. Students are expected to get their machines up and running immediately in order to have adequate time to work.

Art Projects

Projects will be worked on during class time. If a student feels that she/he is falling behind, that student should talk to Mr. Cavill about the possibility of working on the project outside of class time. Not all art projects will be graded, but all are required. Non-graded projects will include practice drawings/techniques that require repetition for mastery.

Critiques

Critiques will be completed at the end of every major art project. Critiques include a description of the project and require objective responses to the work. Each student is responsible for a self-critique that will be given on specified days. Students will also be responsible for completing one peer critique that will be finished after the self-critiques are finished.

Weekly Homework

Homework will be turned in every Monday, and will consist of the completion of one drawing done in the InkArt program, one set of blog entries, and a third assignment picked from the list below. To see how these assignments will be graded scroll down to Homework Grades.

1)   Drawing done in InkArt program

2)   Digital drawing done on MyOats.com

3)   Digital drawing from Google SketchUp

4)   Blog Entry

Quizzes

Quizzes will be given periodically. At least two day’s notice will be given before the quizzes are delivered. Quiz information will be accrued from blog posts, lectures, handouts, videos, and/or any other form of information disseminated to the class.

Extra Credit

There will be a constant opportunity for Extra Credit (E.C.) in the class. Any student is welcome to turn in a maximum of two extra homework assignments per week. However, E.C. assignments are only worth two (2) points each and are subject to the same grading criteria as the original assignments. Students cannot turn in E.C. without completing the required homework for the week, and must submit the E.C. with original homework assignment to WebCT or to the blog depending on the assignment chosen.

Midterm & Final Projects and Tests

There will be both a Midterm and Final in this class, and both will be a conglomeration of written test work combined with a culminating project. The Final for the class will account for 20% of the overall grade for the class.

Project Grades

The amount of points for each project will be determined by its complexity, length and difficulty. Grades will not be subjective, but will be based on pre-determined, objective criteria.  This criteria will be given to the students at the beginning of the project.

Homework Grades

InkArt Drawing:

A drawing done in InkArt is expected to contain all seven elements of art, fill the page, and be accompanied by a .jpg image that is used as a model. E.C. drawings do not require .jpg images. Note: after each element of art has been discussed in class, it will be required in your drawings.

This drawing is worth five (5) points. One (1) point will be deducted per missing element or filled page. Not including a .jpg image or tracing will result in a score of zero (0) for the drawing.

Weekly Blog Entry:

Students are required to make one blog entry per week that includes at least three (3) original and objective sentences that are relevant to the parent post for the week, and are required to have information cited from one outside-of-class resource. Additionally, students are required to respond to one peer with at least two (2) original and objective sentences.

Each original and objective statement will be worth one point, not to exceed five (5) points. And one (1) point will be deducted for each incorrectly spelled word or error in grammar. Failure to include one cited reference will result in a score of zero (0) for the assignment.

Digital Drawing from MyOats.com:

This assignment can be chosen to complete the required three assignments for Weekly Homework. The drawing must be representational and include line, shape, color, texture, and either form or value. A .jpg image model is not required for this drawing. Note: after each element of art has been discussed in class, it will be required in your drawings.

This drawing is worth five (5) points, and one (1) point will be deducted per missing element. A non-representational drawing will result in a score of zero (0) for the assignment.

Google SketchUp Drawing:

This assignment can be chosen to complete the required three assignments for Weekly Homework. It is expected that this drawing will include all seven (7) elements of art, be representational, and be more complex in form than a toaster.

This drawing is worth five (5) points, and one (1) point will be deducted per missing element. A non-representational or overly simple drawing will result in a score of zero (0) for the assignment.
