Standard 10.1 - Rise of Democratic Ideas
Humanitas Theme:
Defining Ourselves: The Individual & Society
Students will begin their exploration of social and political consciousness by examining the following ideas:
- what is life? ... - what is a healthy life ... - what is a quality life?
- what is a society? ... - what is a quality society?
Within the scope of the Humanitas theme, students will also work to understand our current democracy as a union of select ideas from Ancient Greece, Rome, Christianity, and Judaism.
Standard 10.2 - Democratic Revolutions
Humanitas Theme:
Chain Reactions: Respiration, Revolution, and Revelations
After defining for themselves what makes a quality life and quality society during the last unit, students will begin to think about what chain of events are necessary to make their definitions reality.
Students will continue their exploration of social and political consciousness by examining the following question:
- Why is the sequence of events in life and society important?
Standard 10.3 - The Industrial Revolution
Humanitas Theme:
Legacies of the Industrial Revolution: the Rise of Cities, the Exploitation of Workers, & the Advancement of Medicine
Student's will explore the events of the Industrial Revolution, focusing specifically on the aspects of urbanization, working conditions, and scientific advances. Through the study of both societal and environmental factors, students will be able to identify the causes and effects of the Industrial Revolution on the society on England, but more importantly, see how those events affected the world on a much larger scale since the events of the late 18th Century. Students will evaluate the positive and negative aspects of the Industrial Revolution, ultimately asking themselves if "it was all worth it?"
Students will continue their exploration of social and political consciousness by examining the following question:
- Does industrialization bring progress?
Standard 10.4 - New Imperialism & Colonialism
Students will study the Era of New Imperialism by reading Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe and conducting a WebQuest focusing on the different perspectives of the colonizers and colonized peoples of Africa.
