Writing Assignment on Lord of the Flies

Directions: Write on one of the following topics. Write at least two typed pages. This is due Monday, March 30.

1) Are you more an animal or more a human being? Refer to specific events or moments in your personal history or daily life.

2) Is Lord of the Flies a good novel? Refer to or quote specific passages to illustrate your delight in or disappointment in the novel. Remember to say what you think a good novel is.

3) Isn’t it true that according to the principles of Natural Selection, the fittest survive? Who are the fittest in this novel? Is there a difference between the “fittest” among humans and the “best”? As for surviving, you may want to speculate on what could have happened if the Navy boat hadn’t appeared at the end to save the remaining boys.

4) If you have something else you’d like to write about, that’s probably okay, but run it by me first.

. . . Two More Questions to Chose From:

1) Do you recall a time when you realized that, like the boys in this novel, you had to behave like an adult and not a child. Maybe you were ready and maybe you weren’t. But the circumstances made you feel as though there were no adults to be responsible, so you had to be. Was it a good experience or not? What did you learn about yourself? Others?

2) When you read a novel, you usually identify most with one of the characters. Based on what you’ve read of the book so far, which character would you rather be: Jack or Piggy? I know you’d probably rather be Ralph or maybe Simon. But try this experiment.

Victorian Poetry Assignment:

This assignment is due on or before Friday, May 22. Here are your choices:

1) Memorize one of the following: “Farewell to Barn and Stack and Tree” by A.E. Housman or “The Dead Drummer” by Thomas Hardy, and be able to write it out in class as it appears on the page. Even if you have it on a handout, you should copy it out in your own handwriting in class and carry that copy around during the week to read and say to yourself. Try to get the punctuation right, as it is a clue to the meter and meaning. But punctuation doesn’t count as much as getting the words right. Extra credit will be given to those who say the poem out loud in class and get it mostly right.

2) Write a ballad in the meter of those two poems. It should have at least three stanzas, 12 lines total. The meter should be 4/3/4/3. “Farewell to barn and stack and tree/Farewell to Severn shore.” The rhyme scheme can be either abab cdcd efef like “Farewell. . .” or if you want to make it easier on yourself, abcb defe ghih.

Note -- For METER HELP see attachment below (Ballad meter document)

Novel Reading Assignment:
  1) Choose a novel from the British Literature section of the book room (we did this Wednesday during class) and begin reading it. 2) Add your name and the title of your novel to the list on Mr. B's desk. 3) Estimate how long it will take you to read the novel and add that information to the list.  I will link you with other chaps reading the same novel for some activities.

You should have finished reading the novel you chose from the British Lit. section of the book room by Friday, May 29.

Writing Assignment on Novel -- Please see the attachments below. I attached it in two forms --  Word 2003 etc. and 2009.

2009-2010 ASSIGNMENTS START HERE:

-- Writing a Sketch -- See attachment below ("Sketch Assignment"). Due Thursday, Sept. 3. (P.S. Finish your summer reading books for the Day of Judgment is Come! Or whatever.)

-- Summer Reading: 1) Be ready Tuesday, 9.8. 2)You will tell us the names of the two books you read. 3) You will choose one of them to talk to the class about.  4) What you won't do is tell the whole plot. Instead, say what it's about, in a sentence or two -- no more. Practice this at home. Is it a novel, a biography, an autobiography? If it's a novel, is fantasy, a thriller, or a just a novel?  5) Try to bring the book to show us what it looks like. 6) Say where you were when you read it -- on the living room couch? In the bathroom? In the back seat of the family car coming home from vacation? 7) Is it any good? Why or why not?  8) Be ready to read a short paragraph from it that gives us a taste of it.

-- The Canterbury Tales -- Read the Prologue by Wednesday, Sept. 9. Be ready to ask in class about anything you don't understand.

-- The Canterbury Tales -- Read
pp. 86-96 in "The Miller's Tale for Monday, 9.14. Finish the tale (pp. 96-106) for Wed., 9.16.

-- The Canterbury Tales -- Read "The Pardoner's Tale" (including prologue), p. 241-258, for Tuesday, Sept. 22.

-- The Canterbury Tales
-- Read the vocabulary list in the attachment below. All these words appear in some form and roughly in this order in "The Pardoner's Tale."  Look up the words you don't know and be ready for a preposterous quiz on Friday, 9.25. Also know the "Seven Deadly Sins," also on the attachment.  We will discuss some of them in class, but we may not get to them all. They won't all be on the quiz. The words I've chosen are not old words found only in Chaucer. They are all words grownups encounter in their reading. Knowing them will serve you well, I think.

The Canterbury Tales -- Read Prologue to "The Wife of Bath's Tale" for Friday, 9.25; Read the tale itself for Tuesday, 9.29

Writing Assignment on The Canterbury Tales -- You’ve read The General Prologue and three of The Canterbury Tales. Which of the tales do you like most and which least? Or, you could write an essay about why none of the tales floated your boat. Or, you could write your own tale. Please type and double-space your reply, which is due on Tuesday, Oct. 6. You’ll have to work out the problem of how long to make it yourself. I suppose it’s like deciding what to wear to school. There are practical considerations – you don’t want to freeze or swelter on the one hand, and you want your opinions to be understood. Then there is style – how long should your skirt be? Should you tuck in your t-shirt or maybe even wear a collared shirt? Do you feel like being noticed or not? And by whom?

Sonnet -- Write an "English" or "Shakespearean" sonnet. It is due Tuesday, October 13. Make use of "Mrs. Formica's Home Sonnet-Writing Kit" which is attached below.

Paradise Writing Assignment -- Due Tuesday, Oct. 20. Write a memory of "paradise" from your life. See attachment below for details ("Writing Assignment about Adam and Eve")

Macbeth Reading Schedule -- See attachment below.

-- Here is a link to an interactive map of Scotland showing where the events of the play take place:
http://www.thelandofmacbeth.com/menu.htm

-- See attached list of passages to be discussed in class after the end of the movie. Review them as per the instructions on the attachment. We'll probably discuss three or four a day this week.

-- Macbeth writing assignment due Thursday, Nov. 19. See attachment below.

-- Thanksgiving poem due Wednesday a.m. See attachment below with examples. Write any form or form-less. Pro- or con-thankfulness.

-- Technology writing assignment due Monday, Dec. 7. See attachment below. See the assignment in an attachment below. Also see attachment on the "structure of the expository essay" below.
