 Step One (Monday-Tuesday in class) You need 2 sheets of paper and a 3" x 5" index card. Head a piece of paper with your name, number, and the date in the upper right corner. Write SPELLING beneath the date. THIS IS THE PAPER ON WHICH YOU WILL COMPLETE YOUR PRACTICE EXERCISES; YOU WILL TURN THIS IN SO THE TEACHER CAN CHECK IT. Select 5-10 words total. Write them in a list on the top five lines of the page. Copy these 5 words into the spelling section of your writing journal so you have a record of all your words. Get a 3" by 5" index card from your teacher. Write your name, number, and the date on the top right corner. Write your words on the card and give it to your teacher or place it in the spelling tray. By the end of each trimester you ought to have 50-250 spelling words you have been working on mastering. Write your words on the other sheet of paper. THIS SHEET YOU WILL KEEP UNTIL REPORT CARD TIME. This page goes in your spelling folder or behind the spelling tab in your binder. Each week you will add your spelling words to this sheet so you have your own record of the words YOU WORKED ON IN SPELLING. Below the list on the top five lines, write each word in a ladder, staircase, pyramid, diamond, rhyme list, anagram list (see below for an example)---you choose the type of practice. Please do all of them the same in a week. For example, do all your words in ladders one week, then the next week do them all in a different way. Think of words that have something in common with each of your words, such as similar meanings, similar sounds, homonyms...in other words, create a category into which your word fits. Here are three possible examples for this using the word "word": word (or makes the er sound in all of these) worm work cupboard Stafford terror word (these all have the er sound made with different letters) whirl learn stirring Jennifer whirly curls word (these are ways you could use the word in different contexts) statement: (The judge delivered the final word on the burglar's fate.) promise: (I give you my word---I will protect your sock monkey.) agree: (I said "This is da shizzle," and my grandma replied "Word!") term: (I am trying to think of a four letter word for "unit of speech" and it starts with a double-you.) 8. ACROSTIC Make up a sentence in which each word starts with the next letter of the spelling word. For example, Always cram really old, stinky tacos into cupboards. 9. Create a multiple-part graphic organizer to reveal things about the word. You could show the meaning, pronuniciation, part of speech, a sentence using the word, words that fall into a category, a diagram...that sort of thing. 10. You could write a story, poem, letters, journal entry from someone else's point of view, or fake news story using each word clearly. Step Two (Wednesday and Thursday in class): ask your spelling partner to quiz you. Handwrite your answers on the same sheet of paper you used for your practice. Then write any words from your list that you missed five times. If you missed no words, proceed to step three. Step Three----(By Friday or whatever the last day of our school week happens to be): Open your writing journal to the spelling section and place a :) beside the words you got right on your quiz. Turn your paper that contains the list, the practice, and the quiz in at the tray on the counter for Spelling.
