Formation

It is not possible to survive just with academic endeavors.
An active life in society transcends knowledge.

Colegio Miguel Pro values education both in and outside of the classroom. To fulfill its mission of "forming men and women for others", the Formation department provides vital programs and opportunities to students that are aimed to develop the whole person. Here you can find the two sides of our formation program: mentoring and pastoral. Use the Table of Contents at the left to select your section of interest.

Mentoring Program

Our mentoring program is the backbone of the social, emotional, and spiritual formation of our students. The goal is to accompany our families in these areas of our students' lives, rather than take their place. The program works with the parents, as well as the students, to promote Christian values of tolerance, understanding, and service through dedication, commitment, and community.

Each class of students has a mentor. These mentors are teachers, but have the additional responsibility to work more intensely with their respective students. The role of the mentor is to gain an intimate knowledge of his or her students, both in the school and at home. This unique and personal relationship provides the means for the school to accompany and assist in the celebrations and challenges of our students. Below are the ways in which our mentors work with both students and their parents to create a supporting and loving community within the school.

Homeroom

Homeroom is a space to focus on the priorities of the students, both academic and personal. Each week, an hour is set aside as a forum for discussion, problem solving, and promotion of self knowledge. Each grade has a curriculum that specifically addresses the social realities of students, such as relationships, sexuality, and vocation. This curriculum acts as the main formation tool of Miguel Pro's mission to provide an integral education.  This time is also used to plan school activities that occur throughout the year such as camping trips and masses.

House Visits

A true formation of our students would be incomplete without a real and honest picture of their home environment. In an effort to gain a more comprehensive understanding of our students, the mentor of each grade is responsible for carrying out house visits with each of his or her students and their families. The goal is to have an open dialogue between parents and the mentor about the academic and personal well-being of each student. More specifically, the mentor's goal is threefold: to help bridge the gap between the home and school, to help express the values and services of the school, and to have the teachers and parents realize the same vision for the formation of the student.

A Miguel Pro house visit goes well beyond what is normally considered a "parent-teacher conference."  This creates a close relationship with the families of our students that not only supports our academic goals, but also combines personal aspects and attention that our students and families need and deserve. This also gives the mentors the ability to begin an intervention between the school and the family if deemed necessary. House visits are our most powerful tool to come to a greater understanding of the needs of our students and creating a holistic community.

Escuela Para Padres - School for Parents

"School for Parents" is dedicated to the principal educators of our students. Sessions are held 4 times a year and provide a space for discussion between the mentor and the parents. The mentors present on a variety of topics such as study habits, spirituality in the home, and address the very same themes presented to students in homeroom, especially tailored to parents. In all sessions, mentors stress the importance of dialogue with their children and the school to improve their quality of life.  After the presentations, parents have the opportunity to share their own experiences with raising their children.  In this atmosphere, parents are able to connect through the joys and challenges of being a parent and offer peer support and affirmation.  This program has been developed for 8 consecutive years in our school. Over time, we have valued the participation of the parents and this has improved the development of our students.

Visitas de Servicio - Service Trips

Service trips are another point of "contact" our students have with society at-large. During their hours in homeroom, the class organizes and plans a visit somewhere outside the school to perform some sort of service. Past service trips have included visits to orphanages, nursing homes, and schools. These visits give our students a chance to take what they have learned from conversations and experiences of service and put their knowledge and talents to work for the good of others. Each class in secondary has one service trip per year. Some classes establish a relationship with a certain site and return to the same place, each year with more experience and new ideas in how they can be of service to others.

Pastoral Work

The formation of the students at Colegio Miguel Pro has an important spiritual component as well. The Pastoral department, in conjunction with the mentoring program, provides a more complete Christian education. The goals of the Pastoral Program are the following.

1) Translate the experience of Christ into the lives of our students.
2) Develop values of solidarity and social justice in our students.
3) Develop and implement "experiences of contact" with our students
4) Teach and live with prayer.
In addition to the programs listed below, the Pastoral Team works with local religious teachers in Habitat in various aspects of spiritual life. The school is associated with works with our students in CCD classes, parents and families preparing for baptisms of their children, and accompanying our students in their commitment to making their first communion.

Encuentro con Cristo - Encounter with Christ

Encuentro con Cristo is one of the principal activities within the Pastoral team. One day a year, each grade level takes time out of their academic schedules to explore more in depth the role of Jesus and spirituality in their lives. A series of activities and reflections tailored to each grade level brings our students into closer contact with the Word of God and guides them to see and feel God´s presence in their every day lives.

Masses

The celebration of the Eucharist is the greatest way we can give gratitude to God, and has an important place in the lives of our students. Father Fred Green celebrates mass for students in 5th grade through 5th year of secondary on average of twice a month. Celebrations include feast days of the patron saints of each class, important dates within the school calendar (such as Youth Day), and important dates in the Church's calendar (such as Pentecost and the Ascension of Mary). Masses are celebrated in the "Cristo, Luz del Mundo" chapel, located across the street from Colegio Miguel Pro.

Retreats

Colegio Miguel Pro offers two retreats a year. The first one is for our teachers, before the academic year begins. Teachers take part in the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises and take time to evaluate their work through the lens of God in preparation for the coming year. During this retreat, participants build a sense of community amongst the staff of the school by share in daily Mass and presentations, while taking the time for personal prayer and reflection. The retreat is held in different retreat houses in Tacna and the surrounding area.

Our students who are involved in our service programs are invited on an overnight retreat at the end of the year. Led by the pastoral team, this retreat focuses on the experience they students have had in their respective service groups. There is opportunity to practice critical thinking and apply service learning techniques by discussing topics such as the meaning and motivation of service, how one can "better" their service, and how this service is incorporated into the teachings of Jesus. Many of our students have expressed their joy and growth this reflective period.
