In our mission to accompany, Colegio Miguel Pro offers resources and services to students, parents and teachers within our education community and beyond. On this page you can explore the different facilities and programs that help to make Colegio Miguel Pro a unique and integral educational environment for children to grow and learn. Service Programs The goal of these after school programs is to offer an opportunity to students to use their skills and talents to provide a service to the school, while shaping the student's own incentives to become "men and women for others". The following programs are a learning ground for students to experience the joys and challenges of working to better one's community and are a critical part of the Miguel Pro formation.
Generation Pro - A computer clubGeneration Pro is a group of students that maintain hardware and software in the school's computer network. Led by the computer teacher, the students have been trained to troubleshoot, clean, and care for the work stations within the school´s computer lab. Thanks to the recent support of the University of San Francisco, a Jesuit institution in California, students have learned to install and run Edubuntu, Ubuntu, and Windows Operating systems. They also help to maintain the quality of the network by frequently running virus software and promote proper use of the Internet. Participants learn how to work as a team and take on responsibilities for the benefit of the school. Students help the school with its technological resources, while also receiving training that can be used later on as a career or job.
Nivelación - Tutoring ProgramNivelación is a tutoring program that involves both the elementary and high school students. High school students are selected to participate as tutors based on their academic performance. They work with elementary students, who are selected based on their need of extra academic support. The program meets twice a week under the supervision of a teacher - moderator. Students are able to work in a quiet environment on various projects and homework assignments, while benefiting from the school's resources. Our elementary students are able to get the boost that they need, while our high school students are able to use their academic skills to help someone else in need and develop a sense of responsibility. This program is also unique in that it is the only program in the school that regularly brings our high school and the elementary students together.
Psychology DepartmentMiguel Pro offers the services of a full time school psychologist. The psychologist evaluates specific needs with at risk students and families. Many families have greatly benefited from the psychologist´s expertise in identifying and confronting challenges within the home that often lead to poor academic performance or behavior difficulties at school. The role of the psychologist is to work with the parents and teachers to address problems found in our families such as instable home environments, domestic violence, and economic hardships.
This holistic focus on the lives of our students is thanks to the NAJ Project, an organization that creates services for at risk children, teens, and young adults. Through this project, the psychology department can be an unbiased communicator between the home, teachers, and administration. Our psychologist only has responsibility to the school and its members, rather than working according to government mandates. Along with working individually with students and parents, the psychologist is a critical resource in our mentoring program.
InfrastructureColegio Miguel Pro has the unique opportunity to provide its students, parents and teachers with a variety of resources that would otherwise be unavailable to the population that the school serves. Thanks to the generosity of local and international donors, Colegio Miguel Pro offers an educational and recreational infrastructure to aid in our mission. LibraryThe Library is staffed from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm, Mondays through Fridays. Elementary and high school students are able to take advantage of the quiet study environment, one which is often difficult to create at home, and the wide array of books, maps, and videos available.Computer LabsMiguel Pro has two computer labs that allow students to use the internet and Office applications to aide in their studies. Thanks to the University of San Francisco, Miguel Pro benefits from the technological tools such as Windows, Word, Publisher, Power Point, and other applications. The labs are used during class hours with teachers and are open after school to provide a quiet and focused work environment. The labs are also used by the computing workshop and maintained by students of the Generation Pro club (see above).AmphitheaterScience LabOur students are able to see their studies come alive in the fully equipped science laboratory. Students can develop problem solving skills first hand, and in a distinct approach from the traditional classroom. Both elementary and high school levels use the science lab to give a more hands on approach to education.
Breakfast and lunch programsIn the first years of the school, a study was released by the Ministry of Education declaring that 51% of children suffered from chronic malnutrition. Based on this finding and Miguel Pro's mission to provide for a child's needs in all respects, the school offers a breakfast service to all of our students free of charge. Breakfast is available every day in conjunction with the Ministry of Education, and a lunch cafeteria service is also available to students and teachers at an economical price. The breakfast and lunch programs help to nourish our students and are more active and focused in our classrooms.
Special EventsFamily DayFamily Day is held in conjunction with the school´s anniversary in November. The Sunday tradition is celebrated with folkloric dances presented by each class, typical Peruvian and Tacnean food, and sports. The day gives a time to relax, to celebrate the accomplishments of our students, and to learn/experience/preserve Peruvian culture within the community. Click here to see pictures
