Carrabassett Valley Academy (CVA) is a stand-out club that has produced 10 Olympians, 72 National Titles, seven X Games competitors, 16 NCAA and USCSA All-Americans, 25 national team members, six world champions and much more. Recognized as a world leader in the snowsports industry and recently presented with the USSA Freestyle Club of the Year award, the academy offers rigorous college preparatory academics that are fully integrated with world class programs in alpine ski racing, big mountain skiing and riding, freestyle and freeride skiing, and snowboarding. In 1969, the Ski Club spawned the Sugarloaf Regional Ski Educational Foundation (SRSEF), to help racers and freestylers sharpen their skills for competitive skiing. While this tutorial program was successful, the SRSEF and others soon became interested in establishing a ski academy at Sugarloaf. In the winter of 1982-1983 CVA opened its doors. CVA boasts a notable list of alumni. Olympic gold medalist Bode Miller ’96; World Champion and seven time X Games medalist Seth Wescott '94; seven time Big Mountain Rider of the Year Jeremy Jones ’93; three time Olympian Kirsten Clark ’95; Olympian Emily Cook ’97; X Games athletes Dan Marion ’05 and Matt Philippi ’04; and U.S. Ski Team member Dave DiGravio ’05 are all a product of CVA's pipeline to the top. Athletically, CVA skiers and snowboarders compete in alpine events, moguls, halfpipe, big-air, rail jams and boardercross locally and across the globe at World Cup, Junior Worlds, Grand Prix, NorAm, Revolution Tour, and USASA events. During the winter season when not competing, CVA student athletes train every day with their coaches on Sugarloaf’s 2,820 vertical feet – including Sugarloaf's FIS-approved trails such as Narrow Gauge, the East's only all-discipline FIS approved trail where the U.S. Alpine National Championships have been held twice. When not on the mountain, CVA skiers and snowboarders train sport-specific dryland sessions in their 20,000 square foot Antigravity Complex (AGC). At the AGC CVA student athletes practice and learn the fine motor skills necessary for success on a race course, pipe, jumps and rails on Olympic quality fly bed bungee trampolines, and an indoor skate park with rails and a bowl. Integrated into the dryland training are specific weight training, plyometrics and stretching programs designed to build strength, agility and flexibility within the athletes. Academically, CVA students from eighth grade through post graduate participate in a rigorous college preparatory academic program while pursuing their athletic goals. Additionally, students are taught the skills necessary to be responsible community members and ultimately exceptional global citizens. Because CVA’s academics and athletics are fully integrated, CVA students develop time management and advocacy skills that are uncommon in typical secondary educational institutions. Support from CVA teachers and coaches for the student athlete in a competitive and multi-faceted program creates unique opportunities that empower students to develop skills for success in highly competitive colleges and universities. For over 25 years, the non-profit club has been successfully training the mind and bodies of Olympians, X-Team athletes and NCAA All-Americans.
