Week Two - March 23

Weekly Blog

Read and Respond to the new blog post (available Friday, March 20)
  • Please click here to go to the blog.
Take a few minutes to look at the posts. A post is a comment written by the owner of the blog. Posts are written to let people read and respond to, kind of like asking people a question on the Internet, and then letting people from all over the world respond. When you reply to a post, everyone can see your reply, so you don't want to use your full name, only your initials, or nickname.
  • After reading the posts, you'll need to reply. To reply to a post, follow these steps:
            1. Click on Comments at the end of the blog post to which you want to reply.
         2. A text box will open below the post. Click the curser inside the box and you can begin typing your response to the post.
Please include your initials at the end of your reply.
         3. When you finish typing your reponse, click on the drop-down arrow to open the "Comment As" options. Choose Anonymous.
          4. If you want to see what it will look like before everyone else, click on Preview.
          5. If you are happy with the way it looks, click on Post Comment.

Reminder: All comments have to be approved by the owner of the blog (the Tech Club teachers) before they are published, so don't worry if you don't see yours right away.

Digital Citizenship

This week we will practice our manners and respect the property of others. There are some resources from CyberSmart attached to the bottom of the page. There is also a letter for parents to read about ways they can help their child show digital citizenship.

Before you copy and paste pictures, paragraphs, or other items from the Internet, please make sure you give credit to the creator or owner. Would you want someone to use something you worked hard to make without giving you any credit? You can use a wiki page to keep the sources you use. Saving the source will also help you if you ever need to find the information later.

Remember to print responsibly: preview the page first, you may just want to save it to refer back to later.

Project Planning

This week you will start planning your project. Hopefully, you already have some idea about what you want to do and how you're going to do it. If you haven't looked at the resources on the Project Resources page, you might want to look at some of the links. If you are looking for a project idea, you might also pull up your Renzulli Learning account and do a search for "technology" projects, competitions, or activities.r

Use your wiki to help you organize, plan, and collaborate with your team. Even if you are doing a project by yourself, you may want a buddy to give you feedback or to help you with some of the details.

Some things to think about:
  • What will you need to do your project?
    • This could include software, applications, programs, hardware, other equipment or tools, saved files, documents or presentations you have already created (especially if you want to build on something you've already done)

  • What needs to be done first, next, and last?
    • You might want to use a planning page, sequence chart, or storyboard to help you order the steps of your project. If you have a hard time breaking large projects down into smaller parts, you might want to work with a buddy on this part (especially if your projects use the same skills or process).

  • What do I want the final product to be?
    • Sometimes it is easier to think about things from the end, and work your way backwards.
      • Creating a project for a competition means  you need to know what is expected of your entry. If you want to enter your project in a contest or exhibition, you'll need to make sure you know the guidelines and requirements for the entry.
      • Creating a project for yourself means that as long as you are happy with the results, the project was a success.

On your mark, get set, be inspired!
