About MoveaboutStay Healthy through the Holiday Season with MoveAbout and Eat Smart Move More's Holiday Challenge. We hope your organization will join us on November 22nd!
Moveabout is a 10 week incentive program that encourages participants to log their minutes of any kind of activity that gets them moving! Our goal is to get as many businesses, employees and interested community members up and moving at least 150 minutes per week. After the 10 weeks, those who have completed their logs return them to their coordinators and become eligable for an array of prizes, including the grand prize of a Weekend Getaway!
News You Can UseJust in Time for the Holidays...Clean It Up! Let's be honest - sometimes food ends up in the back of the fridge long past its expiration date. Fortunately, November 15th is Clean Your Refrigerator Day. This November, why not take the opportunity to clear out old foods and re-stock with healthy choices? In just three simple steps you will be on your way to a cleaner, healthier kitchen:
Step 1: Going shelf by shelf, take out all the food, jars, and containers. If possible, remove shelves and drawers then wash in warm soapy water. Next, clean the sides, top and bottom of the refrigerator using a rag or sponge soaked in warm soapy water then wipe with a clean damp cloth.
Step 2: Throw out any food that is moldy, spoiled or past its expiration date. As a good rule of thumb jams, jellies and ketchup should be thrown out 6 months after they are opened, mustard after 12 months. Toss mayonnaise after 2 months. Pickles and olives have a shorter shelf life - about 1 month - after they are opened.
Step 3: Re-stock your refrigerator with healthy items for simple snacks and quick weeknight meals. The best foods to have on hand include low-fat dairy such as milk, yogurt or cheese and fresh fruits and vegetables. Cut up vegetables and fruit at the beginning of the week for quick weeknight meal preparation or a grab-and-go snack. | Move About CalendarAre You Ready to Take the Holiday Challenge with MoveAbout? Many of you may have been wondering what happened to Fall MoveAbout. Many North Carolinians gain between 1 and 5 pounds each holiday season. It may not sound like much, but most people who gain weight during the holidays never manage to return to their pre-holiday weight. Eat Smart, Move More North Carolina is offering for the 5th year a free resource to help you stuff the turkey, but not yourself this holiday season. Rather than focusing on trying to lose weight, this six-week challenge provides participants with tips, tricks and ideas to help maintain weight throughout the holiday season. Online sign-up is open at www.MyEatSmartMoveMore.com. Only an email address is needed to join. All participant information is kept confidential. The challenge will begin Nov. 22 and run through Dec. 31. People who sign up early and complete the pre-survey will receive bonus healthy holiday recipes and a shopping list. Each week, participants will receive free weekly emailed newsletters with tips to manage holiday stress, ideas for fitting physical activity in during the busy season, and resources for cooking quick and easy meals when time is in short supply. A calorie counter, food log and activity log are also available for free download to help track your progress. In 2009, more than 5,200 people from all 100 North Carolina counties and 47 other states took part in the challenge. At the end of the program, 82 percent reported maintaining their weight. The Eat Smart, Move More…Maintain, don’t gain! Holiday Challenge is a part of the Eat Smart, Move More NC movement to increase healthy eating and physical activity opportunities wherever North Carolinians live, learn, earn, play and pray.
