When is the season?

  • The season begins on August 1.
  • The regular season concludes in mid to late October.
  • Football playoffs, for Jr. Pee Wee and higher, begin immediately after the regular season and conclude in late November.  Mighty Mites may play one game after the regular season.

What is the time commitment and why?

  • The Marauders practice a maximum of 10 hours per week prior to Labor Day and a maximum of 6 hours per week after Labor Day.
  • Beginning on August 29, 2009, there will be one football game per week on either a Saturday or Sunday through mid-October - 9 total games.
Why?
  • Pop Warner permits a maximum of 10 hours of practice time per week between August 1 and Labor Day.
  • Between Labor Day and the end of the season, Pop Warner permits a maximum of 6 hours of practice time per week.
  • Pop Warner requires 10 hours of conditioning before players can participate in contact drills.
  • Pop Warner requires 10 hours of contact drills before players can participate in a scrimmage or game.
  • The Marauders and other local Pop Warner associations schedule scrimmages beginning two weeks after practice begins.  As a result our players must complete the conditioning and contact requirements in the first two weeks of August.
Note: Water breaks are not included as a part of practice, so a 2-1/2 hour "practice" time typically includes 2 hours of practice and 2 15 minute water breaks.

Where are competitions held?

  • 4 Home Football Games per season are held at Graham Middle School
  • 5 Away Football Games are held through our league, which extends from Pacifica and Pittsburg in the north to Monterey and Salinas in the south.
  • Local and Regional Cheerleading competitions are held at Shoreline Amphitheatre and Santa Clara University (Leavey Center)
  • National Cheerleading competitions are held at Walt Disney World in Florida.
Is Tackle Football safe to play?

With the proper coaching in football techniques, proper fitting of protective equipment coupled with the use of the age/weight matrix to ensure that players of similar size and ability are playing each other, youth tackle football could be safer than other sports where a child is exposed to hazards and the game does not require protective equipment.

  • An article entitled "Injuries in Youth Football: A Prospective Observational Cohort Analysis Among Players Aged 9 to 13 Years" published in the April 2002 Mayo Clinic Proceedings concluded that injury in youth football was generally mild.
  • National Pop Warner provides some additional comments on safety.
