Volunteers at the Morris Farm are one the farm’s most valuable assets and are key to the farm’s success. Volunteers are both the face and the livelihood of the farm. Please consider joining the dynamic team of fellow volunteers at the Morris Farm. Thank you!

On-Going Volunteer Opportunities

Visitor Center Volunteer

From June 3 through Labor Day, 2-hour shifts are available daily.

Being a volunteer at the Morris Farm Visitor Center means welcoming visitors, whether you are inside the barn answering phones, strolling the gardens meeting and greeting the public, or helping with some fun administrative work. 

Volunteers needed: 5 volunteers per day.

Job Description: The volunteers at the Visitor Center are the face of the Farm! Provide visitors with history of the Farm, information about programs, updates on animals and crops, and fund raising needs. Answer phones and take messages, assist with mailings, filing, and workshop registrations. Stroll the outside gardens with visitors.

Time Commitment: Attend one training session, given on the first Tuesday of June, July and August at 10a.m. and volunteer for one 2 hour shift each daily from June 3rd to Labor Day.

Marketing and Promotions: Poster Maker

Job Description: Work with Event Coordinators on development of marketing materials.

Membership Database Manager

Volunteers needed: 1
Job Description:  This is an ongoing volunteer position to help with managing the Morris Farm’s membership database by entering new members data, updating existing member data ad hoc, provide mailing lists for membership drives, annual appeals, backyard farmer, etc. Requires knowledge of db management.  Appropriate person should be able to advice on existing database and make recommendations to Board on whether it should be kept or discarded. 

Time Commitment: The Membership Database Manager should be able to commit one 1-2 hour session per week to update and maintain the membership database.

Archivist

Review, organize and catalog in a way suitable for preservation all Morris Farm press clippings, photos and Board minutes

Total Volunteers needed: 1-2
Job Description:  This work is a one-time project that will take place at the Morris Farm.  There are currently 8-10 boxes of historical archives and photos located in the Visitor & Volunteer Center (FKA: Bo’s Office).  The materials should be cataloged in a way that enables items like photos and press clippings to be preserved and available for public perusal in the Visitor & Volunteer Center. 
Time Commitment: This project will take 16-20 hours.

Children’s Garden Gardeners

Total Volunteers need: limitless

Dates: All Spring and Summer

Job Description: This year's Children's Garden is being planted by the children of our community in addition to any volunteers who want to pitch in - there is plenty of gardening for everyone!  The Morris Farm's Children's Garden is a delightful addition to the farm's offerings.  A place all can come together and garden at their whim.  This year, the Morris Farm is pleased to add a few rows to feed the hungry; we will be planting vegetables forour local food bank.  If you are interested in gaining gardening experience and also helping feed the hungry, this is the perfect opportunity.  This is a family friendly gardening opportunity.

Weed Yanker: Anytime, any day, walk through the garden and pull weeds between plants and flowers – if you are not sure, just ask. Relax and don't worry. After awhile, you will learn what is a weed and what is a carefully cultivated plant.
Initial Garden Planter: Spend and hour or spend the day planting the initial garden, Sundays in May and June, or Monday afternoons at our Plant and Play Party playdates

Time Commitment: Now through harvest time in the fall; daily or according to your schedule.

One Day Volunteer Positions


2009 Fall  Music & Cider Social

DATE: October 3, 2009   3:00pm – 6:00pm

Total Volunteers needed: 16+

Picture a crisp sunny fall afternoon at the farm, live music wafting out from the back deck, people milling around with fresh pressed cider and freshly baked treats. Celebrate the bounty of local foods, tap your toes to the upbeat rhythms, and enjoy the company of your community.  Be a part of a fun, social, community-building event at the farm this October!

Specific Jobs:  

SETUP

Number of Volunteers needed: 3

Job Description: Arriving at 2:00 to set up the tables, get out cups, help with the cider press as necessary, prices on baked goods, etc. – then serving cider or  taking money

Time Commitment:  2 hours – 1 hr of setup, one hour of the event

Procuring Apples

Number of Volunteers needed: 2

Job Description: We need to get apples for our event, preferably donated from someone (or many “someones”)

Time Commitment: Whatever it takes to get the apples necessary (quantity will be known at a later date)

Running the Cider Press

Number of Volunteers needed: 4

Job Description: Running the press or supervising others who want to give it a try – will depend on the rules surrounding the cider press (whose we use), as well as doling out the cider – straining into pitchers, into cups, possibly serving

Time Commitment: 1.5 hours (two from 3-4:30, two from 4:30 to 6)

Bake Sale Tables

Number of Volunteers needed: 3

Job Description: Staffing the bake sale table –the first round will be doing some organizing, labeling, prices, etc, taking money

Time Commitment: 2 hours (2:30-4:30, 3-5 and 4 – 6)

Baking / donating baked goods

Number of Volunteers needed: 6-8? The more the merrier!

Job Description: Baking and donating cookies, cakes, muffins, breads or other treats for the bake sale. Recruit others (ie: if each of 6 get three people to bake, that’s 18 different things). Would love to focus on local foods as ingredients.

Time Commitment:  Whatever it takes to recruit three other bakers, bake and drop off the donations

Clean Up

Number of Volunteers needed: 2

Job Description: Cleaning up after the event – taking tables and chairs down, sweeping, trash out, mop the floor as necessary, quick vac of the rug, etc.

Time Commitment: 5:30 – 7 (max – could be done sooner with more help or if we’re really efficient!)

 

2009 Community Thanksgiving Potluck

Total Volunteers need: 13

Date: Thursday, November 19, 2009, 6:00 - 8:00pm

Where: The Morris Farm

Description: The Morris Farm has sponsored a community potluck dinner the week before Thanksgiving for years.  Last year over 100 people came together to share a delicious meal and warm company at this truly wonderful community dinner.  There is just something about breaking bread with your neighbors at the start of the holiday season that really brings out the best in all of us.  Help us keep the tradition alive by joining in as one of our Community Thanksgiving Potluck Hosts.  Of course, dinner is included!

2009 Morris Farm Holiday Celebration

Description: Making gifts for special people and friends in our lives during the holidays is a beloved part of the holiday spirit. This holiday, come to the Morris Farm and spend time creating gifts for home and family. Leaders of each craft-making station are delighted to share with participants the joy of creating and giving handcrafted gifts that warm the soul and delight those we most care about. Re-discover the joy of creating homemade gifts for giving during this holiday season. Gift-wrapping stations are available to wrap all your homemade creations.

Specific Jobs:

Holiday Swags – Create a beautiful door or wall ornament with native Maine balsam fir and white pine boughs from a local SCS Certified-Green Tree Farm in Edgecomb. Decorate the swag with cones and a big red ribbon.

Volunteers needed: 4 (2 each shift)

Job Description: Assist people in creating a swag with pre-collected materials. A short how-to course for volunteers precedes the event. Includes pick-up and takedown.

Time Commitment: 9:30 – 12:30 or 12:30 – 3:30

 

Homemade Pot Pourri – Create your own pot pourri from collected wild native Maine plants and flora with a drop of oil of essence to bring out the zing of holiday effervescence. Take home your bag to fill your home with the wonderfully familiar scents of the Maine woods, holiday-style.

Volunteers needed: 2 (1 each shift)

Job Description: Assist people in measuring and mixing the ingredients for pot pourri. A short how-to course for volunteers precedes the event. Includes pick-up and takedown.

Time Commitment: 9:30 – 12:30 or 12:30 – 3:30

 

Birds Like Treats, Too! – Make that timeless gift of a pine cone treat, wrapped in peanut butter and seeds, to hang on the old apple tree for our feathered friends.

Volunteers needed: 4 (2 each shift)

Job Description: Assist people in rolling pine cones in pre-measured cone-coating. A short how-to course for volunteers precedes the event. Includes pick-up and takedown.

Time Commitment: 9:30 – 12:30 or 12:30 – 3:30

 

Write a Book for a Special Someone – Blank books made out of recycled materials and lots of good old crayons are on hand for a quiet moment or two to write and illustrate a personalized story to give to someone VERY special. Volunteers will be on hand to write the texts for those youngsters who are best at telling and illustrating the story.

Volunteers needed: 2 (1 each shift)

Job Description: Assist people in explaining the project. A short how-to course for volunteers precedes the event. Includes pick-up and takedown. May include writing for young literacy enthusiasts.

Your Holiday Thoughts in a Card – The simplest gift of thought is still the best gift of all. Join whimsical hand-made card creator, Hannah LaDay, and her array of special scissors and materials to create a card destined to become a treasured ornament.

Volunteers needed: 4 (2 each shift)

Job Description: Assist Hannah in helping people to cut and glue cards. A short how-to course for volunteers precedes the event. Includes pick-up and takedown.

Holiday Fairy House Workshop – Fairies are the spirit of the land, celebrating nature every day, including the holidays. Join Amanda Russell in creating a take-home Fairy House worthy of placement as a centerpiece on the holiday table.

Volunteers needed: 2 (1 each shift)

Job Description: Assist Amanda and participants in hot-gluing Fairy Houses.

Time Commitment: 9:30 – 12:30 or 12:30 – 3:30

 

Doggie Holiday Biscuits– Make and bake a big dog biscuit for your doggie, who won’t be able to wait for the holidays to try this delicious and healthy snack. Recipes to take home.

Volunteers needed: 4 (2 each shift)

Job Description: Assist people in rolling out, cutting and baking biscuits with pre-made dough. A short how-to course for volunteers precedes the event. Includes pick-up and takedown.

Old Fashioned Bake Sale – What are the holidays without your neighbor’s favorite baked sweets all ready to take home? Priced separately.
