An excerpt from “A Cure for the Common Life” by Max Lucado
The Church, God’s Family
We are incredibly, the body of Christ. And though we may not always act like our Father, there is no greater truth than this: We are his. Inalterably. He loves us. Undyingly. Nothing can separate us from the love of Christ (Rom. 8:38-39)
Scripture calls the church a poem. “We are His workmanship” (Eph. 2:10) “Workmanship” descends from the Greek word poeo or “poetry” We are God’s poetry! What Longfellow did with pen and paper, our Maker does with us. We express his creative best.
You aren’t God’s poetry; I’m not God’s poetry. We are God’s poetry. Poetry demands variety. “God works through different men in different ways, but it is the same God who achieves his purposes through them all” (1 Cor. 12:6.) God uses all types to type his message. Logical thinkers. Emotional worshippers. Dynamic leaders. Docile followers. The visionaries who lead, the studious who ponder, the generous who pay the bills. Action packed verbs. Rock-solid nouns. Enigmatic question marks. Alone, we are meaningless symbols on a page. But collectively, we inspire. “All of you together are Christ’s body, and each one of you is a separate and necessary part of it” (1 Cor. 12:27.) None of us can do what all of us can do…Jesus works in community!!
Here are just a few of the ongoing ways we serve as a body…How can you help?

FEBRUARY 5, 2012The Bible: A Mine to be Quarried taken from Max Lucado’s book Next Door Savior On a recent trip to the United Kingdom, our family visited a castle. In the center of the garden sat a maze. Row after row of shoulder high hedges, leading to one dead end after another. Successfully navigate the labyrinth, and discover the door to a tall tower in the center of the garden. Were you to look at our family pictures of the trip, you’d see four of our five family members standing on the top of the tower. Hmmm, someone is still on the ground. Guess who? I was stuck in the foliage. I just couldn’t figure out which way to go. Ah, but then I heard a voice from above. “Hey, Dad.” I looked up to see Sara, peering through the turret at the top. “you’re going the wrong way,” she explained. “Back up and turn right.” Do you think I trusted her? I didn’t have to. I could have trusted my own instincts, consulted other confused tourists, sat and pouted and wondered why God would let this happen to me. But do you know what I did? I listened. Her vantage point was better than mine. She was above the maze. She could see what I couldn’t. Do you think we should do the same with God?” God is…higher than the heavens.”(Job 22:12) “The Lord is high above all nations” (Ps. 113:4) Can he not see what eludes us? Doesn’t he want to get us out and bring us home? Then we should do what Jesus did. Rely on Scripture. Doubt your doubts before you doubt your beliefs. Jesus told Satan, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” (Matt. 4:4) The verb proceeds is literally “pouring ou.t” Its tense suggests that God is constantly and aggressively communicating with the world through his word. God is speaking still! Prayers Please continue to follow the updates about Brian Games on Facebook or www.caringbridge.com. Keep the following people in your prayers: the Gidley family, Roger’s Sister in law had surgery this past week, both of Janette’s parents were in the hospital, and Janette for the responsibilities of caring for aging parents. JANUARY 8, 2012
Little Things and New Beginnings Last Sunday Garrett Sausen reminded us to consider the small things as we enter this year’s phase of “new beginnings.” One of the ways each of us can be mindful of those small things is in the care and maintenance of our building. When we moved into this location in 2005, the interior was new and had been lovingly constructed by contractors and a number of our talented members. Since then, we have added decorative touches, reconfigured space, and extended the invitation to the greater community to use our building in a variety of ways. We believe all efforts have been made to share Jesus with Morgantown. As we look forward to 2012 and beyond, how might we apply Garrett’s call to a consideration of small things? For one, we encourage each one to treat the physical space with care and respect. The auditorium’s carpet has been carefully cleaned of spills and wax, and now we hope it will wear well. We respectfully request that only water be brought into the auditorium when we gather as a body. Such a practice will extend the life of the carpet significantly. Another small way to help us keep the building in top shape is to help those who clean the building by returning hymnals or Bibles to the pew racks. Just a quick glance of the space each of us has occupied can help to identify those areas that need a little attention. If you have left dishes or other personal items in the building, take a few minutes to collect them. Then they will be available for the next call for meals. Unclaimed Bibles are on the coat rack shelf, too. Look around you. Do you see a project that needs to be tackled? Volunteer your talents and time by letting John Hart, Alan Neptune, or Tracy Hagedorn know. With Janet Whisler’s retirement effective January 1, we realize we have lost a valuable asset and recognize that we will all need to be attentive to what she and Bob have done with such patience and skill over the last 6 years in this building. Let each of us do what we can with the small things! From the Elders Prayers Lusi Bolt, Winston Bolt’s wife, is undergoing cancer treatments. Please pray for her and the medical staff caring for her. She would appreciate hearing from you! Her email and postal mail addresses are on the bulletin board. Shut-Ins Please keep these wonderful older members in your prayers and on your card list, as well: Dorothy Moore, Helen Pallai, Berniece Faggert, Janice Cyzick, Rose Vanata, Zeke Fletcher, and Freda Kerns. Announcements New Sunday Evening Class "Laugh Your Way to a Better Marriage" class will begin tonight, at 6 pm at the church building. This class is open to anyone in the church who wishes to participate—newlyweds, engaged or dating couples, and those with 50 years together! The class will run through February and culminate in a Marriage Retreat in March. The sign-up sheet to participate in the college dinner & devo for the new semester is on the bulletin board. You may sign up as an individual to bring a dish or a small group may want to bring the meal and stay for the study. Karen Dalton, a resident at Mapleshire and a friend of our congregation, passed away this past Tuesday. Although she never attended here, she said she felt like a member of our family because of the great love shown to her. She will be missed. Communion Preparers are needed to assist in preparing the bread and juice for Sundays. We ask that you agree to serve for a month at a time. The sign-up sheet is in the kitchen.
