The Kjottkaker Saga
( aka Storied Origins of Swedish Meatballs )

Concerning part of my family tree, though it is true that I am third generation Norse stock, as both of my parents were of half Norwegian descent, it works out that I am as well. However I never managed to learn very much about Norwegian language or culture or of our family roots in the old country either. Yet certain things are still remembered and cherished. It is from such memories that this saga is drawn (as well as from my imagination of course). Read: View: more photos Return: Norsehorse's Home on the Web Visit my blog: Visit these blogs too: Beyond Vermont State Hospital (VSH) blog (above photo of me, taken by a friend, Spring 2005) | During my childhood, from time to time when talking about the family's Norwegian heritage and with a certain look in his eye, my father would loudly burst into singing something akin to the following verse: Ten thousand Swedes tore through the weeds, chased by one Norwegian.
He would then of course flash a huge smile, pleased with himself. No
matter how many times I would ask or how hard I tried, I could never
learn from him what -- if any -- history was behind the verse, other
than it being a humorous tale of course. *Note*: Current version of the evolving fable I originally cooked up several years ago and have told from time to time, especially when I use to cook and serve up a meal of my version of Norwegian Meatballs or Norwegian Meatloaf.
