This website details the proposal we developed while in our restaurant Modern Tea. Although we are involved in a new phase of teaching inner city youth about cooking and working, we hold onto the possibility of someday connecting to this dream. Thank you for visiting!
Imagine
your favorite neighborhood restaurant, one serving local, farm-fresh
foods. Now imagine it functioning as a
high school learning lab, with at-risk-youth working side-by-side with
professional chefs and kitchen staff.
Finally, imagine some of San
Francisco’s finest restaurateurs, chefs, food
purveyors, and farmers engaging with these same high school students, inviting
them to experience the transformative properties of food and cooking.
You’ve
just imagined Modern Cooks, an
innovative non-profit that is developing garden-to-table learning projects in
collaboration with other community-based organizations and neighborhood public
schools. Our newest project will be at Ida B.
Wells High
School, providing hands-on opportunities for
at-risk youth to gain vocational skills in food and cooking, both at the high school and in a professional
restaurant setting. We are building on
the success of our pilot project, a summer and after school program that
brought school-aged youth from the Western Addition Beacon Center through Koshland Park Community Learning Garden into the kitchen at Modern Tea restaurant to prepare and then enjoy garden-fresh meals.
Thank you to B. Wenger for many of these pictures!
