Soccer

Seoul Underground during World Cup

Soccer is one of my great passions in life.  I love playing, coaching, and watching soccer.

Playing

At SLAC, I played twice a week with some of my co-workers.  We played with small cones or small PVC pipe goals.  We played on the SLAC campus but then moved to the Stanford intramural fields.  The quality of play varied greatly from game to game but we had some very good players (especially with all our visitors from Europe) so we have some very competitive matches.  I also occasionally played with a co-ed soccer team, the Old Pros, in the South Bay Adult Soccer League.  At the University of Illinois, I would play in pick up games south of the Florida at University of Illinois.  I played IM my first year at Illinois. The last couple of years at Illinois I played one to two times a week outdoor in the warm months and indoor during the cold months with the Gray Beard Soccer group.

Coaching

I helped to coach the Deanza Riptides, a CYSA Class 1 U17 girls soccer team in northern California from 1999-2003.  The Riptides were a member of the Deanza Youth Soccer League of the California Youth Soccer Association (CYSA) District II.   During my coaching tenure, I underwent CYSA coaches training and acquired CYSA "F" and "E" licenses.  I first became involved because my boss's daughter played on the team but enjoyed it so much that I continued to coach.  I highly recommend coaching.  Youth soccer teams are often in need of competent coaches, especially at the younger ages.

World Cup Trip

In June of 2002, I was fortunate enough to go with two of my friends to South Korea to watch the 2002 FIFA World Cup.  It was an amazing experience.  We watched 2 first round matches, France vs. Denmark and U.S.A. vs. Poland.  You can see pictures from our trip here.
