Brief Bio

Mississippi (1976-1994)

I was born Michael Maclean Wolf in Starkville, MS.  Starkville is a small town of approximately 30,000 people in the northeast region of the state.  My mother taught elementary school in the Starkville Public School District and my father was an English professor at Mississippi State University (MSU).  I  have a younger brother, Alex, who currently lives in Florida.  I spent my first two years of high school at Starkville High School .  My junior and senior years were spent at the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science (MSMS) in Columbus, MS.  At MSMS, I received a first rate education with advanced courses in physics, chemistry, mathematics, and computer science as well as research at MSU.  I also got my first taste of enormous amounts of homework, which helped me maintain my sanity once I reached college.

Claremont, CA (1994-1998)

I spent my undergraduate years at Harvey Mudd College (HMC) in Claremont, CA.  I double majored in both computer science and biology (talk about getting no sleep).  I enjoyed my time at HMC and in Southern California.  However, I often missed my good (not healthy, but tasty) Mississippi food.  During vacations, I did research with Dr. Anthony Skjellum at the MSU Engineering Research Center, at the MSU CS Department,  and finally at his company MPI Software Technology, Inc.

San Francisco Bay Area (1998-2003)

For five years, I was employed at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) as a software developer.  I primarily developed three dimensional parallel electromagnetic codes used in modeling large accelerator structures.  For more about what I did at SLAC see my SLAC work page.  While in the Bay Area, I spent most of my free time playing and coaching soccer.

Champaign-Urbana (2003-2009)

I just recently finished my Ph.D. (technically conferred in October) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in computer science.  I was a Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF) from 2003-2007.   My advisor was Professor Michael Heath and my thesis research was in the area of combinatorial scientific computing.

Albuquerque, NM (2009-present)

I just recently began at postdoctoral position at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
