Mathematics Grade 4

Students need to continue to review their reviewing their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills throughout the year. It is a vital component of nearly all of the math they will do this year. They will be working towards solving a variety of problems involving the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of single- and multi-digit whole numbers, and involving the addition and subtraction of decimal numbers to tenths and money amounts, using a variety of strategies.

Students are also learning about time! They are learning not only to calculate time, and to read with the 12 and 24 clock system. They are also learning to how to calculate elapsed time. As in the amount of time it takes for them to complete an activity. I can't promise that they will learn how to use their time more efficiently in this unit though, sorry!
Students are currently learning to compare and order fractions by considering their size and number of the fractional parts. Students will also be learning to compare fractions to benchmarks of 0, 1/2, and 1. Students will be able to compare and explain the relationshiop between equivalent fractions: 3/3 = 1 = 6/6. Students will then link this knowledge with decimal numbers. For example, they will investigate and explain how 0.5 = 1/2 = 12/24.

Students will also be calculating perimeter and area. They will relate this knowledge to identifying and describing the location of a object, using a grid map, and reflect two-dementional shapes using a grid along its axis.

By the end of the year, the students will be learning about probability.
