Frequently Asked Questions

Discussion format Some groups choose to have a professional leader, someone who will ensure focused discussion and who will have substantial background knowledge. This can lead to a very formal structure which we feel is not suitable for our reading circle. However, the reading circle administrator will bring notes and background information on the months book to the reading circle meeting for anyone that wishes to have access to the information. The reading circle administrator arranges the social events, notifies members of the next meeting, points of interest and the latest news, however does not dictate what people can and cannot discuss. We discuss the months book and everyone's perspective and opinion is respected. Most importantly, remember there is no right or wrong in literary criticism or appreciation, so we aim to be kind, listen, take turns, share, and enjoy!
Is membership free or do I need to pay a monthly fee?  The MK Reading Circle is completely free to join and no monthly fee is charged. However this policy may be reviewed and discussed with members in January 2010.
Who gets to choose the books? Our selection policy is for each member to take turns to nominate a book for the month in alphabetical order. We attempt to ensure that each month a different genre and author is nominated. We then discuss the nominated and vote on the nomination. All nominations are considered carefully so that no arguments arise and more often than not the nominated book is accepted. If a book is not nominated by a member or they have not attended the reading circle then it will go to the next member in alphabetical order. If a book is still not nominated or an agreement is not made then the Penguin's book of the month will be selected.
