A native of Columbiana, Alabama, Michael Joe Moore attended the University of Montevallo and University of Alabama on scholastic scholarships, graduating and receiving his B.S. in Metallurical Engineering in 1976.  Since graduation, he has worked in the foundry industry and has held positions as Melting Supervisor, Foundry Engineer, and Foundry Manager.  Moore has been Foundry Manager for J. C. Steele and Sons for the last fifteen years.

Moore’s watercolors reflect his passion for both molten metal and history.  His watercolors of foundry scenes have been collected by customers here in the USA, Canada and Europe.  In January of 2007, he had three of his foundry scenes published in the foundry trade magazine, Modern Casting.  Also, Ashland Chemical Company chose Moore’s foundry watercolors to appear on the cover of their 2008  and their 2009 “Foundry Solutions” calendar.  He also had one of his Statesville watercolors choosen to appear on the cover of Sandra Douglas Campbell"s book "Iredell County A Brief History"

In 2007, Moore did six watercolors of historic Mount Airy, NC, Andy Griffith’s home town.  Two of these watercolors have been reproduced and are available at “Talley’s Custom Frame & Gallery” in Mount Airy, NC.

Recently, he has focused on local history and landmarks of Statesville, NC, where he has lived for the last twenty one years.  This series of watercolors focused on downtown Statesville and its landmarks.  He has also done what he calls “house portraits” of various homes in the historical district.  Moore calls this series of paintings “A Portrait of Statesville”.

Moore is almost completely self taught and only started doing watercolors three years ago.  He did work in oils for years, but now prefers watercolors and says that the paintings he does with them come more freely than they ever did in oil.  He prefers to take his own reference photos and work from them alone in his studio.

Once asked what his goal for his art was, Moore replied to get his viewers to really open their eyes and see and appreciate what we have around us.

Moore is now painting a series of paintings of "Historic Mooresville NC.  These watercolors can be viewed at Four Corners Frame and Gallery at 112 South Main Street in Mooresville,NC.

Moore is now doing a series of paintings based on downtown Davidson and Hickory, NC.

He has also started a series of watercolors based on the campus at the University of Montevallo in Montevallo,  Al.
