Re:publication is my graduation project for the HKU about the role of sampling within the graphic world and how far one can go. I took the work of my fellow graduates (without them knowing), remixed it and claimed it as my own. For the remixes, I combined the graphics with quotes from early hiphop tracks. Although hiphop only came into existence by sampling or stealing other music, the MC's were often heard saying they were unique and original. They also stated that nobody was allowed to touch or copy their stuff. The booklet contains the remixes, the sampled graphic work as well as the lyrics with the used quotes. The way of folding has people flipping pages in each direction constantly and gives the reader the sense that (s)he is dissecting the remixes. The booklet is accompanied by a CD with all the original songs on it. Instead of page numbers, the booklet has track numbers that correlate with those on the CD. The first track is a audio collage of quotes that show the irony of early hiphop lyrics. Listen to a sample here Some remix sketches. Originals by Wim Crouwel and Herman van Bostelen. |
