Mrs World NZ Winner

Media Release. 20th March 2009

Mrs World New Zealand 2009 Paula Herbert

The NZ Asia Pacific Trust is delighted to announce the winner of the Mrs World New Zealand Title for 2009 - Paula Herbert.

“Paula stood out from all our entrants” said Rose Foulger, Pageant Director of the New Zealand Asia Pacific Trust; the NZ franchise holders for Mrs World New Zealand.   “When Adelaide Tucker picked her at the finals of the ‘Fashion in the Field’ at the Ellerslie Derby Day races and recommended her, we were delighted”.

“The Mrs World pageants are always wonderful extravaganzas, and we are excited about this year’s which is being held in Vietnam in November with the total support of the Vietnamese Government.    The 2009 international broadcast will commence on November 22nd  from Ba Ria in the Vung Tau Province”  said Rose.

Since taking on the franchise last year, the NZAPT has successfully reignited  and re-established the Miss World New Zealand and Mrs World New Zealand titles.

Mrs World is an international beauty pageant organised annually as a beauty contest for married women. It was originally based on the Mrs America beauty pageant. It has been organized since 1985.

“While beauty is the key element, contestants are also urged to voice their opinions about marriage, family, current events and of course be knowledgeable about their country.  We hope that we have also introduced  a more contemporary and glamorous approach to the NZ arm.”  said Rose.

“The NZAPT sent the winner of Miss World New Zealand - Kahurangi Taylor to Johannesburg, South Africa last year to compete for the Miss World title”  said Trust Secretary, Desmond Foulger, husband of Rose.   “We were very proud she was one of the 25 semifinalists in the competition from a record 109 entrants last year.”

“Mrs World is an exciting Pageant that we have added to our list of overseas pageants, Complimenting Miss Tourism Queen International, Miss Tourism International, Miss Model of the World, Miss Global Beauty Queen, Miss Intercontinental, Miss Tourism Metropolitan, Miss Leisure World, Pacific Island Candidates for Miss Earth and Miss Tourism Queen International and many others.   It will become a regular annual feature in New Zealand” he said.

“Judging this year was done from applications with photos submitted from all over New Zealand.” said   Desmond.   “We have some beautiful married women in this country.  We have a very good feeling about Paula, she has a natural charm and quiet grace.   It is hoped that we can repeat the success for New Zealand that Barbara Riley achieved when representing NZ back in 1987 she won the Mrs World title.”

Paula Herbert recounts her unexpected journey to winning the Mrs World New Zealand title.

“After being placed in the “Fashion in the Field” at the Porsche NZ Polo Open in March,

I was automatically entered as a finalist in this year's Mercedes Prix de Fashion at Ellerslie Derby Day.  That’s when Adelaide Tucker introduced herself.   She already seemed to know me! She smiled and told me I would be in for a surprise over the next few days.   I never in my wildest dreams expected to be going on this journey with Mrs World New Zealand.”

“Since then I have been on a whole new learning curve about the differences between modeling and pageantry.”   Said Paula.      “Rose and Desmond Foulger have been married nearly 20 years and have had only one argument over that time (over a driving lesson!). I love being around such energy as my husband and I also work together in the same way.

“The concept of pageantry is a fascinating one, where beauty and poise have to be locked in together with upholding one’s own values, representing one’s country as well as being knowledgeable about all possibilities for an ambassador to take to advantage New Zealand. I know there is a big difference between looking one’s best for pictures and articulating a message on the international stage, on behalf of your country in front of several million international viewers” said Paula.

Paula will be officially crowned as Mrs World New Zealand 2009 on the evening of April 4th 2009  by Miss World New Zealand 2008. The ceremony will take place at the Miss World New Zealand semi finals grand Charity Gala Dinner at Skycity.   “As a Charitable Trust, the profit from this event will go to Variety, the children's charity, which is our charity of choice for 2009” said Desmond.
