The social learning theory by Vygotsky states that modeling is the most effective way for students to learn (Woolfolk, 2004). This theory pertains to both academic modeling and moral development modeling. Students examine the teacher and their peers and learn by their modeling. It is important for teachers to model behaviors and attitudes that they would like their students to emulate in the classroom. In my classroom, I use my manners such as saying “please” and “thank you.” This helps as my students have also learned to use their manners in the classroom, as well as on the playground. When introducing a new lesson, scaffolding and zone of proximal development is used to make certain that my students comprehend the material and be able to be successful in solving similar problems in the future. “This is the area where instruction can succeed, because real learning is possible” (Woolfolk, 2004).
