Welcome to First Grade! I look forward to working with you and your child during the coming year. We are off to a great start!

Students are rewarded for good behavior and hard work with stickers, rewards, and praise. We try to focus on the "good" and encourage each child to be self-disciplined and responsible. We will use the daily traffic light (green light, yellow light, red light) to monitor behavior. Please see classroom rules and consequences below.

Classroom Rules

1. Be kind to others.

2. No talking when the teacher is talking.

3. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.

4. Raise your hand and wait to speak.

5. Do not get out of your seat without permission.

Rules were created by the students with my help. We feel these rules are important so that our classroom runs smoothly and is a positive learning environment for all.

Discipline Policy

When students are disruptive in class or break a class rule, the following will go into effect:

GREEN LIGHT: All students begin their day on the green light. One warning received before name is moved from green light to yellow light.

YELLOW LIGHT: Yellow ticket given. Students have a chance to redeem themselves during the day and may move back to green.

RED LIGHT: Red ticket given with note home to parent. Note must be returned with parent signature.

*Serious behavior such as hitting or bad language goes straight to red without a warning.

“Behavior cards” will be sent home every Monday in their homework folder. This will ensure that you are aware of your child’s behavior in class on a weekly basis. The green, yellow and red tickets are given each day. However, the behavior card will also make you aware of any warnings your child had received. For your child to receive an “excellent” rating on their behavior card, the student must not receive any warnings. As a reward, after ten green tickets are accumulated, they may be turned in for a trip to the “Treasure Box”.  Tuesdays and Fridays are set aside for the Treasure Box. Please make sure your child puts their green tickets in a safe place. I will not replace any lost tickets. Also, since we are a class that promotes recycling, I ask that you do not write on the tickets. We reuse them :)

Please assist your child with the following homework assignments:

            1. Reading Study Log

Each student will be assigned to read ten minutes each night (excluding Fridays) with a parent (or Grandparent, older brother or sister, etc). Please make sure you and your child log all information required on the reading log and return it each day in their homework folder. Your child may choose any book they wish. Please note all parents are required to initial the log each day. If the log is not signed, homework is considered incomplete and will reflect on your child’s progress report and/or report card.

2. Curriculum Assignments

Your child will be given assignments in various curriculum areas to complete each night. All homework assignments will be sent home on a sheet of paper. Starting in November, each child will write their own homework in a blue homework assignment book provided by school. Once these books are sent home, please initial daily.

Homework is an important extension of learning that has taken place at school. It provides for practice of skills and application of principles based upon work begun in the classroom. It is important that your child complete homework assignments daily. Again, if one part of homework is not complete, it will reflect in their grades. You may find your child needs help completing their homework assignments. I ask that you assist them but not do the work for them. Please contact me if your child finds the work extremely difficult.

Thank you in advance for your support this year. Please contact me with any concerns or questions. Working as a team will ensure success for all our children.
