Mo. House endorses proposed school prayer amendment

posted Apr 27, 2009 9:42 PM by Thomas Otley

The Associated Press

Updated: 04/25/2009 04:23:53 PM MDT

Jefferson City, Mo. » The Missouri House has given initial approval to a proposed constitutional amendment guaranteeing Missourians' right to pray in public places, including schools.

Any such prayers would have to be voluntary and nondisruptive, under the proposal.

The House endorsed the proposed change in the Missouri Constitution on a vote of 127-25. If approved on a second House vote and later by the Senate, it would appear on a statewide ballot next year.

Rep. Mike McGhee, a Republican, said his measure would not allow anything not already permitted under state law. Rather, he said, it's a response to reports from around the state of students being stopped while trying to pray at public schools.

Since 1875, the Missouri constitution has stated that all people have a right to "worship Almighty God according to the dictates of their own consciences" and that citizens cannot be barred from public office or juries or be harassed because of their religious beliefs.

McGhee's amendment would add language specifically requiring schools to ensure students can pray privately or in groups and to display the Bill of Rights in all classrooms. It would also allow clergy members to offer prayers before public meetings.

Democratic Rep. Mike Talboy questioned the need to hold a statewide election on a constitutional amendment that would have no practical effect.

"This is akin to us putting up an amendment to the people to rename the state of Missouri, the state of Missouri," said Talboy.

Rock The River - Prayer Request from Wanda Bailey

posted Apr 21, 2009 5:22 AM by Thomas Otley

Would you please pray with us for this Urgent Need for the Rock the River Tour this week:

Pray for all Adults, especially Parents, Grandparents and all potential parents,

in the greater St. Louis area to attend the free Adult Christian Life & Witness Course – April 23-25.

Pray that Adults will comprehend the dividends this investment of time and energy could make in their young people’s lives forever, as well as impact their homes immediately.

Please pray for opportunities to share these benefits of attending this Course with every adult in your sphere of influence:

The CHRISTIAN LIFE & WITNESS COURSE (CLWC) for Adults:

Will refresh their own walk with the Lord.

Will allow them to hear the biblical principles their youth will be taught at FM419.

Will equip them to more effectively reinforce those same biblical principles at home.

Will introduce the Bring A Friend prayer program so parents can support their youth in their prayer outreach to their unchurched friends.

Will help them guide their youth in making wiser daily life decisions so they can become "influencers for Christ" and not be as easily influenced by the ways of the world.

(See Schedule of Events at billygraham.org and click on the Rock the River link for details for all 5 locations.)

May the Lord bless you as you pray and encourage the participation of the adults within your sphere of influence. Thank you so much for your prayers.

Blessings,

7)  Attention UP Team members and supporters:  On the National Day of Prayer the UP Team will celebrate its 7th anniversary.  The Team has grown steadily from that time.  But one thing we have never done is a “re-up,” a reaching out to folks to request a recommitment.  So, be expecting in the mail, towards the beginning of May most likely, a letter from me and a form for you to complete.  There will be a stamped envelope enclosed, or you can respond by e-mail.  It is very important for every recipient to respond!  There will be ample options for you to respond to:  If you are a member and want to continue or discontinue; if you are a member and want verification of your day and hour or want to change it; if you are not a member but a supporter and want to continue praying for the UP Team and receiving the Newsletter – or want to now take a day and hour; if you are receiving the Newsletter by mail but have an e-mail address that we can use; if you have any suggestions for improvement or any criticisms.  As we move toward 24/7 prayer, it is obviously important to know for sure who the commitment people continue to be, so that we have a solid base to continue to build on.  Also, if you have names of potential members we can contact, that would be super also.

GATEWAY NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER

LAUNCHES 35+ GATHERINGS

IN METRO AREA

MAY 7th

The 58th Annual Observance of the National Day of Prayer is Thursday, May 7th. Though so much has changed since last National Day of Prayer, our calling to pray for our Nation and its leaders has not. It has only intensified. The new President and his administration are in full swing and the Body of Christ again has its opportunity to renew their hearts to pray with no expectation of man but only of God. "Prayer, America's Hope" is the theme with Psalm 33:22, "May Your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in You."

Throughout the Metro area there will be people gathering at the noon time hour to pray at over 30 City Halls, at Court Houses, business offices, churches, homes, parks and even out on the street. Local prayer gathering locations are listed further in this article. The featured evening event will be outdoors, under the Arch on Riverfront Stage. Worship begins at 6 pm. The Prayer Service is at 7pm. Prior to this, there will be continuous Scripture Reading, beginning at noon. To volunteer or for more information call 314-253-4075 or go to www.gatewayndp.org.

The Gateway National Day of Prayer, was officially established as a 501(c)3 organization in the early 1990's by Brenda Young under the auspices of the National Day of Prayer Task Force. She has faithfully led downtown NDP events since the ealiest days of the Christian expression of the NDP. The founder of the St. Louis Metro Area involvement was a senior citizen, Jay Teutenberg, who is now with the Lord. He began in the late 80's to recruit Christians to lead prayer at most City Halls on the National Day of Prayer.

The NDP is a day for the Body of Christ and all Americans to come out from behind the walls of demoninations and assemble in unity to thank God for His many blessings, repent of our personal and national sins and to plead to our God for His divine help. With the culture eroding morally, financially and in many other ways, Christians can publically demonstrate that God is the source of our help. Christians should be the first to repent and pray for our Nation to return to God. Scripture also exhorts us to pray for our leaders. (1 Timothy 2:1-2)..

Prayer is the most powerful tool that God has given us to have victory over Satan's schemes to destroy our Christian heritage. "The weapons we fight with...have divine power to demolish strongholds...arguements and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God" 1 Corinthians 10:4-5.

Since the observance of a day of national prayer is a result of an act of Congress, citizens are free to meet on public property, such as city halls and court houses. This is a God-given, government sanctioned day to be a light to our dark culture. As Jesus is the Light of the World, He calls us to be "... the light of the world...neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand...let your light shine before men...that they may praise your Father in heaven.." Matthew 5:14-16..

Because of the documented faith of our founding fathers, many presidents have called for a day set aside for prayer. In 1952, President Harry Truman signed a joint resolution of Congress that officially established a National Day of Prayer. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan selected the first Thursday in May of each year as the official day for all Americans to pray to God, according to their own understanding, on behalf of our Nation. In recent years, the president and all 50 governors have officially proclaimed the first Thusday in May as a day of prayer. (See Bill Federer's article on "Day of Prayer" further in this publication.)

Today, the Judeo-Christian expression of the National Day of Prayer is guided by the National Day of Prayer Task Force. Chaired by Shirley Dobson, this organization has helped spread the grassroots movement which now includes thousands of local coordinators who plan events with millions in attendance each year. Mrs Dobson says, "Scripture tells us that nations rise and fall at God's command, and the hearts of rulers are in His hand." God tells us that "If My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land." 11 Chronicles 7:14.

Beth Moore has been selected to be this year's Honorary Chairman. She says, "We are in days that would give way to despair if we were not a people who knew a God who was willing to hear and willing to act...God has told us that we can impact our generation and generations. to come....Thank God for raining down mercy on us, and ask that we would see a time of revival and a time of renewal like we've never known."

National Day of Prayer from Shirley Dobson

Greetings from the National Day of Prayer Task Force!
As Chairman, I want to encourage you to mark Thursday, May 7th on your calendar and take time to pray for our country on that day.

Our theme for this year's National Day of Prayer is Prayer…America's Hope! It's based on Psalm 33:22, which says, "May Your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in You."
This is an extremely critical time in America's history. From economic pressures, to the ongoing threat of terrorism, to the unraveling of our culture's moral fabric, many people are dealing with a deep sense of uncertainty and apprehension.
Visit www.NationalDayofPrayer.org, to find local events, connect with other volunteers in your area, download prayer resources and participate in our online video contest, where the winner and a guest will join Honorary Chairman, Beth Moore, and me in Washington D.C., for our national NDP observance. In addition, the winning inspirational video will be aired on GOD TV, which is available in more than 200 countries around the world!
The video contest begins on Monday, April 6, and concludes on Friday, April 24, 2009. Michael W. Smith will kick off the contest with a special announcement which you can watch on www.NationalDayofPrayer.org.

There are many other ways you can get involved:
Join our LIVE online prayer room every Thursday at Noon CST
Request free devotionals
Sign-up for weekly prayer tips via email
Support Regan Smith, driver of the NDP and Furniture Row race car at NASCAR's Talladega event on April 26th
View GodTV's LIVE webcast and television coverage of the National Observance from Washington D.C. from 9-noon EST on May 7th.
Again, I hope you will join with our Task Force and millions of other Americans on Thursday, May 7th, to observe the 58th annual National Day of Prayer.

Thank you, and may GOD BLESS AMERICA.
