Miss Kellis

Overview

Hello! I am so pleased to have the privilege of teaching English this year at Kearns Jr. High. I teach 7th, 8th, and 8th grade honors classes, and I have really enjoyed working with my students already.

About Me

I graduated from Brigham Young University (Go Cougars!), where I majored in English Education.  English was a logical choice for me because I love to read and write; however, I haven't always loved English. I remember hating reading, writing, and my parents who made me do both of those things frequently. What changed? I had an amazing teacher, Mrs. Feloso, in third grade who helped me find books I loved to read. Suddenly reading was no longer a chore. In high school, I had an incredible teacher, Mr. Houser, who pushed me harder than any other teacher. We wrote essays every 3.5 days, and I tried my best to get a perfect score on at least one. I never did get a perfect score on an essay in his class, but I didn't give up on writing. Finally, my senior year of college, my writing had improved to the point that I won an essay contest on campus.

Why I teach

I want to help my students in the same way that Mrs. Feloso and Mr. Houser helped me. I want to push them to their limits and light within them the same passion for reading and writing that I have burning within me. I want to share with my students the great poets and authors of the ages. I want to teach them to love the way a well worded sentence rolls off the tongue. I want to challenge them to think and challenge them to succeed. This is why I teach.
