England 2012

Interested in traveling to England with Ms. Lynch and me over April Vacation?? Please enroll ASAP! The deadline is Thursday, 10/20/11. Visit eftours.com/enroll and use our tour #: 1015729

For homework schedules, please see your class period in the sidebar (for this week) or your class period's calendar under the calendar link at the bottom of the sidebar (for a monthly view). The dates given are DUE dates for each assignment.

For documents you either missed or lost, please see the Attachments section (also at the bottom of the page or on the sidebar.) Sometimes documents are not posted on this website because I may have used a book with worksheets, rather than making a document myself. If you are looking for something that isn't here, e-mail me to let me know that you did take the initiative to look for it on the website, and come in early the next day so I can give you a copy! If you are absent, there will be copies waiting for you in the absent binder. If you are going to be out for an extended period of time and you want me to send home work, just send me an e-mail and I will make you a packet that someone can pick up for you!

Announcements

For announcements, please follow me on Twitter: @WHSBortone

Remember: If you are having trouble with anything at all (writing an essay, studying for a test, understanding the reading, etc.), please come talk to me before or after school. I am here to help YOU!

No late homework!!!

Class Policies

1. Arrive on time and do not pack up/line up early.
2. Raise your hand.
3. Be kind and polite to your neighbors. Say "excuse me," "please," and "thank you."
4. Late homework is not accepted. Bring in your assignments on time.
5. Be respectful. I have a no tolerance policy when it comes to disrespecting your classmates or me. Hurtful/profane language/comments will result in serious consequences.

When you are absent:
1. Check your class mailbox for missed assignments and handouts.
2. See me before or after school to find out what else you missed and when you can make up any tests or quizzes. Please do not approach me about this in class; you are not my only student! I am available each day before school and many days after school.

*The school policy is that you have 2 days to make up work for each 1 day you miss, as long as your absence is excused. If you do not at least talk to me and make arrangements with me during this time period, you will not be permitted to make up your work. Missing school and making up the work you miss is your responsibility.

WHS English Department Beliefs and Direction Statement

Wilmington 6-12 English Department

    Beliefs and Direction Statement

Adopted by Wilmington Middle School and Wilmington High School English teachers on May 28, 2008

Our English department believes the following:

The Wilmington 6-12 English department believes we can stimulate our students by providing them with the opportunities to read and analyze diverse literature and to use language creatively and powerfully when writing and speaking. With an emphasis on helping students develop strengths as critical thinkers and effective communicators and on providing a strong foundation of reading and writing skills, the 6-12 English curriculums will prepare students to meet their next level of challenges.

Our English department would like to move in the following direction:

6-12 Goals:

Examine literature’s relationship to its intellectual and artistic traditions, as well as to history, philosophy, culture, and related fields.

Establish a teaching strategy with a universal language that can be used across the curriculum. Develop a writing assessment tool (beyond a rubric) that will follow a scope and sequence along grades and levels, give teachers a common vocabulary when developing young writers , and eventually create a more cohesive and focused model for writing.

Raise MCAS English scores.

6-8 Goals:

Explain the difference between paraphrasing and plagiarizing. Teach strategies to avoid plagiarism. Introduce citation rules.

Grade 6 Specific Goals:

To introduce and make familiar, descriptive language and terminology from the MCAS Reading/ Language Arts Tests.

To consistently integrate this terminology into lessons when analyzing each excerpt, short story, novel, etc., (when appropriate) throughout the school year.

        9-12 Goals:

Pilot texts with the goal to purchase the best text as classroom sets.

Integrate more technology in every English classroom including PowerPoint presentations (student and teacher created) and integration of SMART board.

Explain plagiarism and paraphrasing and teach MLA citations rules.

Become more aware colleague’s assignments and work (i.e. time to share lesson plans and success/failure stories) in order for each teacher to better envision the “big picture” of high school English.

Incorporate nonfiction into each grade level curriculum.
