  • Your speech topic is due Thursday 3/20/2008.
  • Your visual aids are due Monday 3/24/2008.  If you don't hand them in early, you will not be allowed to use them.
  • You may use note cards, but I suggest you only use one.  If you READ instead of speak, you will lose points.
  • Time limit is 3 - 5 minutes.

Due 2/22/08: Midterm Grades - You must print out your grade from TIES (or have your parents print it out), have it signed and turn it in to me before you leave on Friday.  If your parents come to conferences, you do not need to have your grade signed.

1st Speech: “Who Am I?”
DUE: Wednesday, 1/30/2008

Instructions:
Select 3 objects that represent something significant about you.
–    Size is important (the audience must see it)
–    Don’t pass them around (it distracts)
–    BE CREATIVE. BRING INTERESTING ITEMS
    Place items in a bag or box(container) and bring them to school on Wednesday 1/30.
    NOTES: You cannot make notecards or other notes. Let the item be your note.  Tell us the “story” involved with each.
    TIME:  3 to 5 minutes long.  (To earn an A or B, you must not fall below or go too long.) 


Some extra notes for your speech:
1. Know the first words you will say
2. Do not begin speaking until you have:
Arrived, and
Paused to look over the audience
3. Do not begin with “AH” or “OK”
4. Begin with an INTEREST OPENER!
5. Be “ONE WITH THE EARTH”
Weight evenly on both feet
Feet about 6-8 inches apart
One foot a little in front of the other
Avoid snake legs and swaying hips
6. Use guideposts:
“The first thing I brought is….”
“The second thing….”
“The third thing….”
7. Look at the audience as you speak:  all of us.
8. Speak to be easily heard by all.  Put more energy into voice than usual.
9. Conclude by
Downward inflection to sound done.
Definite language which indicates you are done.
10. Pause, then leave.

3-13-08:  Practiced impromptu speeches.

3-12-08:  Watched and graded WJAG News Show 3, took the Chapter 5 test, and practiced impromptu speeches.

3-11-08:  WJAG News Show was taped today.    You should also be reading Chapter Five for tomorrow.

3-10-08:  Due to technical difficulties, WJAG News Show practice for show three didn't work out.  Be PREPARED for tomorrow.  You should also be reading Chapter Five for the test on Wednesday. 

3-7-08:  WJAG News Show practice for show three today.  It didn't go well.  Be PREPARED on Monday.  You should also be reading Chapter Five for the test on Tuesday.  

3-6-08:  Continued presentation of Interview speeches.  Make sure you prepare for the WJAG News Show tomorrow.  You should be reading Chapter Five for the test next Tuesday.

3-4-08:  We listened to a speech from our school's speech team.  We also watched and graded our show from yesterday.  We began to watch and grade the Interview speeches.  This will continue through Thursday.  I will select speakers at random so be prepared.

3-3-08:  We taped WJAG Show 2.  Your PowerPoint for you interview speech must be completed and handed into the folder on the Multi Media server by the end of the day today.  You must have the grading rubric and questions on your speech instructions completed and handed in to me on Monday as well.  We will begin the speeches on Tuesday  3/4/2008.  I will select speakers at random so be prepared. 2-29-08:  WJAG Show 2 Practice was today.  We will tape on Monday.  Make sure you have your script.  Your PowerPoint for you interview speech must be completed and handed into the folder on the Multi Media server by the end of the day on 3/3/2008.  You must have the grading rubric and questions on your speech instructions completed and handed in to me on Monday as well.  We will begin the speeches on Tuesday  3/4/2008.  I will select speakers at random so be prepared. 2-28-08:  Make sure you have a rough draft of your speech written if you have a speaking part on this week's news show.  Read Chapter 5 by 3/11/2008.  We went to the Blue Lab to work on PowerPoints for the Interview speech.  If you've lost your directions, you can download them here: Interview Speech with PowerPoint. 2-27-08:  If you haven't turned in your Mid-Term Parent Signature, you should do it a.s.a.p.  It's late.  We took the Chapter 15 test today.  We finished watching and grading The Editorials and the first WJAG News Show.  Please make sure you complete your interviews for the PowerPoint Speech.  If you've lost your directions, you can download them here: Interview Speech with PowerPoint. 2-26-08:  We watched and graded some of the Editorial Speeches and discussed upcoming assignments.  We will continue this tomorrow.  You need to start planning your Interview Speech with PowerPoint.  We will work on some of this today and tomorrow.   You may use this time to do research for your WJAG TV job for Friday.

2-25-08:  WJAG TV News show went well today.  Look for schedules for upcoming shows on BEC TV.  Make sure you are reading Chapter 15 for the quiz on Wednesday.  Start planning and preparing your interview on communication in the workplace.  You should have this interview done by this Wednesday.  WJAG Show 2 people should start preparing for their jobs.

2-22-08:  Parent signatures were due today on Midterm Grades.  WJAG TV News show practice in the TV Studio was hijacked by late Editorial speeches.  Make sure you are reading Chapter 15 for the quiz next Wednesday.  Start planning and preparing your interview on communication in the workplace.  You should have this interview done by next Wednesday.

2-21-08:  We took some notes on introductions to prepare for upcoming speeches.  We also worked together to plan WJAG News for Friday's practice show.

2-20-08:  Chapter Four test was given.  We watched a WJAG News show and looked at assignments for Friday's practice show.  We also discussed requirements for next week's work on the PowerPoint/Interview speech.

2-19-08:  Editorial speeches continued in the TV Studio during tutorial.  Friday is the last day we will tape the Editorials.  You have one chance left if you still haven't gone.  We met in the auditorium to see a performance by www.genocideintervention.net  You can contact your elected officials by calling 1-800-GENOCIDE.  Afterwards, we went to the TV Studio to discuss the upcoming WJAG TV news show we will work on each week until the end of the term.  Chapter Four test has been moved to tomorrow!

2-14-08:  Editorial speeches continued in the TV Studio.  Make sure you are reading Chapter Four for the test on Tuesday. 

2-13-08:  Editorial Final Drafts were due yesterday.  We started the Editorial speeches in the TV Studio, and we shall carry on today.  Make sure you are reading Chapter Four for the test on Tuesday. 

2-12-08:  Editorial Final Drafts are due today: Two copies, typed, double-spaced with 1 1/2" margins, have at least three pieces of support, indicate two camera changes and include a word count. Staple one copy to your grading rubric/rough draft for me, and I'll give your copy back to you after I check it off.  Type your name on your paper EXACTLY how it should appear on your Editorial.    Today we begin to tape the Editorials!

2-11-08:  Quiz on Chapters 6 and 7 today! Editorial Revised Drafts were handed back. Please make corrections and bring TWO copies of your final draft tomorrow.  These should be typed, double-spaced with 1 1/2" margins, have at least three pieces of support, indicate two camera changes and include a word count. Staple one copy to your grading rubric/rough draft for me, and I'll give your copy back to you after I check it off.  Type your name on your paper EXACTLY how it should appear on your Editorial.   

2-8-08:  Editorial Revised Drafts were due today. I will look them over this weekend in order to give you comments and suggestions to improve your speech.  I will hand them back to you on Monday.  You will make the corrections and bring TWO copies of your final draft on Tuesday 2/12/2008.  These should be typed with 1 1/2" margins, have at least three pieces of support, indicate two camera changes and a word count. Please staple one of them to your grading rubric/rough draft. Make sure your name is typed on your paper EXACTLY the way you want it to appear on your Editorial.  Make sure you are reading Chapters Six and Seven for the quiz on Monday. 

2-7-08:  Editorial Rough Drafts were handed back today.   Please look at my comments and type your speech.  Remember to read the directions, suggestions and example I handed out to you.  Most of your sentences are too long right now.  You need to document your sources.  You should have at least three facts, incidents, reasons, examples, and/or statistics in your speech.  A typed, revised draft is due tomorrow.  This should look like a final draft:   1 1/2" margins, typed, double-spaced, marked with camera changed (like in the example).   The fewer changes I make to your draft, the better you will do.  Make sure you are reading Chapters Six and Seven for the quiz on Monday. 

2-6-08:  Editorial Rough Drafts were due today.   You should begin writing your speech in the suggested format.  I will look over rough drafts tonight.  Your typed, revised drafts are due on Friday.  Look at paper guidelines.  We continued impromptu speeches until the end of class.  Make sure you are reading Chapters Six and Seven--you will have a quiz on Monday. 

2-5-08: Editorial speech topics were due and assigned today.  Rough Drafts (fill out the worksheet I gave you) are due at the beginning of class tomorrow.   We continued impromptu speeches until the end of class.  Make sure you are reading Chapters Six and Seven--you will have a quiz on Monday.

2-4-08:  Students took the Chapter 3 Quiz in the first half of class.  We discussed the Editorial in great detail and looked at project requirements, which can be downloaded on the left.  We performed some additional impromptu speeches for practice.  

2-1-08:  Students continued to perform the “Who Am I?” Speech for the remainder of class.  We briefly discussed the Editorial.  Full directions will be given on Monday 2-4-08.  We performed some additional impromptu speeches for practice.  Remember to continue to read your textbook.  Read Chapter Three.  There will be a Quiz on Monday.

1-30-08: We finished up impromptu speeches at the beginning of class. Students began to perform the “Who Am I?” Speech for the remainder of class.  Remember to continue to read your textbook.  Read Chapter Three.  There will be a Quiz on Monday.

1-29-08: Students took the Chapter One Test from the textbook for the first half hour of class.  The class watched an example of the “Who Am I?” Speech from a visitor.  We continued impromptu speeches for the rest of class.  Remember to bring your three items for your 1st Speech: “Who Am I?” for tomorrow!

1-28-08: We discussed tomorrow's quiz.  I performed a version of the "Who Am I?" speech that begin on Wednesday.  Make sure you have your items ready Wednesday.  Turn in your communication log tomorrow.  Review your notes from the text.  There will be a quiz at the beginning of class tomorrow. 

1-25-08: We reviewed the reading (p. 16-21) from last night and made an outline of highlighted items.  We took notes on a few more tips for the "Who Am I?" Speech.  We also spoke for a little while on yesterday's nonverbal exercise.  We began some impromptu speeches.  Make sure you do your communication log that's due on Monday.  Review your notes from the text.  There will be a quiz at the beginning of class on Tuesday.

1-24-08: We reviewed the reading (p. 4-15) from last night and made an outline of highlighted items.  Please make a log of one day similar to that which you can find on p. 7.  You will hand this in on Monday 1/28/08.  we went over some ideas for the 1st Speech.  We took notes on instructions for extemporaneous vs. impromptu speeches in The Magic 3.ppt.  We did a non-verbal activity like charades.  Read pages 16-26.

1-23-08: I introduced myself to the class and read through the parent letter, tentative schedule and course expectations.  We watched examples of Editorial Speeches and WJAGTV.  We went over the directions for the 1st formal speech (see sidebar).  The Student Data Sheet was handed out.  Please remember to sign out your textbook.  Read pages 4-15 for tomorrow.
