Introduction The SPORTS Lab is a diverse group of faculty and students who conduct research on the phonetics and psycholinguistics of Spanish and Portuguese. We carry out experiments on the production and perception of speech as well as on spoken word recognition. Most (but not all) of our research is concerned with bilingualism and second language speech learning. Other topics of interest include sound change, allophonic alternations, intonational phonology and sociophonetics The laboratory facilities consist of a small hole-in-the-wall in the basement of the Modern Languages Building of the University of Arizona were the team conducts their research and meet to discuss their phonetic and psycholinguistic interests. Our equipment include a sound-attenuated booth, digital voice recorders, digital audio interfaces, microphone pre-amplifiers, microphones, headphones, and response pads. Our research is also conducted in the field. Miquel Simonet, Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Spanish & Portuguese, is the director of the laboratory.
