Procedures for the Minor in Psychological Statistics and Methods

  1. The student selects a member of the Psychological Statistics and Methods Coordinating Committee who is willing to serve as the student's minor area adviser. Committee members are listed on the form "Request for Admission to the Minor and Plan of Study."

  2. Together, the student and minor area adviser specify a plan of study for the minor that lists the courses to be taken and a schedule for their completion. A total of seven courses at the 7000 level or above in statistics and methods is required. Doctoral students in the Department of Psychological Sciences or Statistics must take at least two of those courses outside their major department.

Doctoral students in departments other than the Department of Psychological Sciences or Statistics must take five courses within these two departments, at least two of which are in statistics and two of which are in psychology.

More detailed specification of the courses required in the plan of study may be stipulated by the student's major department and the student should consult with their major department in this regard.

Students in the Ph.D. program in the Department of Psychological Sciences must complete, with a grade of "B" or better:

All of the following four courses from the Department of Psychological Sciences

  • Psych 8710 General Linear Models in Psych I

  • Psych 8720 General Linear Models in Psych II

  • Psych 9710 Multivariate Statistics in Psychology

  • Psych 9720 Latent Variable Models

One of the following Psychology Department Courses.

  • Psych 9520 Psychometrics

  • Psych 9725 The Literature Review

  • Psych 9760 Categorical Data Analysis

Two approved courses at the 7000 level or above offered in the Departments of Statistics, Mathematics, or in other departments provided those courses are primarily statistics-oriented or methods-oriented. The Psychology Department Graduate Student Handbook contains course suggestions. Note that Statistics 7510 cannot be used to fulfill minor requirements.

  1. After the plan of study for the minor has been approved by both the student's major adviser and the student's minor area adviser, it is submitted to the Coordinator for the Minor in Psychological who will either review and sign it (if it meets the stated requirements) or request a review of the plan by the full committee. If the Coordinator for the Minor signs the form, the student should then request the remaining signatures from the remaining committee members for the minor.

  2. After the plan of study has been approved, any course changes in the plan must be approved by the student's major adviser, the student's miner-area adviser, and the Psychological Statistics and Methods Coordinating Committee using the "Plan of Study Course Substitution Form."

  3. After successfully completing the courses listed in the plan of study, the student will submit a "request for certification" to the Coordinator for the Minor who will then notify the Graduate School that the student has completed the requirements for the Minor in Psychological Statistics and Methods and that the student's transcript should indicate that accomplishment.
