The Minor in Psychological Statistics and Methods at the University of Missouri

The Minor in Psychological Statistics and Methods at the University of Missouri is a minor open to graduate students at the University of Missouri. The program is administered by the Department of Psychological Sciences and the Department of Statistics at the University of Missouri. The procedures for completing the minor are described below and also in this document. To apply for the minor, it is necessary to complete the form for the proposed minor, select an advisor from the committee membership indicated in the form, and secure the requisite signatures. If it is necessary to substitute courses in the proposed minor, the course substitution form is completed and required signatures are obtained. Upon completion of the proposed coursework. the form for the request to certify completion of the minor is completed with the indicated signatures, and this form is sent on to the University of Missouri Graduate School.

Procedures for the Minor in Psychological Statistics and Methods at the University of Missouri

  1. The student selects a member of the Psychological Statistics and Methods Coordinating Committee who is willing to serve as the student's minor area adviser. Committee members are listed on the form "Request for Admission to the Minor and Plan of Study."

  2. Together, the student and minor area adviser specify a plan of study for the minor that lists the courses to be taken and a schedule for their completion. A total of seven courses at the 7000 level or above in statistics and methods is required. Doctoral students in the Department of Psychological Sciences or Statistics must take at least two of those courses outside their major department.

Doctoral students in departments other than the Department of Psychological Sciences or Statistics must take five courses within these two departments, at least two of which are in statistics and two of which are in psychology.

More detailed specification of the courses required in the plan of study may be stipulated by the student's major department and the student should consult with their major department in this regard.

For graduate students enrolled in the Department of Psychological Sciences at the University of Missouri

Effective Fall semester of 2009, students in the Ph.D. program in the Department of Psychological Sciences must complete, with a grade of "B" or better:

All of the following three courses from the Department of Psychological Sciences

  • Psych 9710 Multivariate Statistics in Psychology

  • Psych 9720 Latent Variable Models

  • Psych 9715 Multilevel Models/HLM

One of the following Psychology Department Courses in the area of Quantitative Psychology. Currently offered courses include, for example:

  • Psych 9520 Psychometrics

  • Psych 9725 The Literature Review

  • Psych 9750 Advanced SEM

  • Psych 9760 Categorical Data Analysis

  • 9734 Psychological Process Models

We expect that additional courses will be offered in the future. In addition, two approved courses at the 7000 level or above offered in the Departments of Statistics, Mathematics, or in other departments provided those courses are primarily statistics-oriented or methods-oriented. Note that the following cannot be used to fulfill minor requirements by students in the Department of Psychological Sciences:

  1. After the plan of study for the minor has been approved by both the student's major adviser and the student's minor area adviser, it is submitted to the Coordinator for the Minor in Psychological who will either review and sign it (if it meets the stated requirements) or request a review of the plan by the full committee. If the Coordinator for the Minor signs the form, the student should then request the remaining signatures from the remaining committee members for the minor.

  2. After the plan of study has been approved, any course changes in the plan must be approved by the student's major adviser, the student's miner-area adviser, and the Psychological Statistics and Methods Coordinating Committee using the "Plan of Study Course Substitution Form."

  3. After successfully completing the courses listed in the plan of study, the student will submit a "request for certification" to the Coordinator for the Minor who will then notify the Graduate School that the student has completed the requirements for the Minor in Psychological Statistics and Methods and that the student's transcript should indicate that accomplishment.
