![]() Mine Collar Mystery is a 28 page full color children's paperback book, written by fourth grade students living in Keweenaw National Historical Park. It is historical fiction, with a bit of fantasy sprinkled in, and a healthy dose of factual information about the rich mining history of the Keweenaw Peninsula in upper Michigan which is printed along the borders of each page.
The story is about Paavo, a twelve-year old Finnish boy who is just old enough to begin working alongside his father and grandfather in the copper mine. Paavo is living in the early 1900s, but trips and finds himself on the playground of a school in the year 2006. He is amazed and sometimes frightened at all the differences between his world and the world of his new friends. The story ends with Jessica, a girl from present day, finding a dusty journal, once belonging to her great-great grandfather, which describes the strange experience of traveling forward in time. The borders of each page are filled with historical facts about the Keweenaw and its rich mining history. Fourth graders who go to school within the borders of Keweenaw National HIstorical Park at CLK Elementary School cooperatively wrote and illustrated this unique story using Copper Country history from a 4th grade point of view.
