CI 5351: Tech Tools for Educators

I am a graduate student in the Learning Technologies MEd program at the University of Minnesota and the purpose of this page is to showcase the technology education projects I have created in this course that I plan on implementing to my own curriculum at Greenleaf Elementary.

Technology Purchase Plan: This is just one sample of the type of technology planning that is required for the complex task of implementing technology into schools.

Concept Map of Greenleaf Elementary's Education Technology: This concept map represents the technologies my school and district currently use and some framework behind how we implement and utilize technology in our education system.

Content Specific Technology: I wanted to find a new tool to use with my elementary students that engages them in math and geometry and requires critical and higher order thinking. So I have looked into the open source technology tool called Google 3D SketchUp  (try it out.... it's free!)

Lesson plan idea and reflection:
Click SketchUp Geometry to view the lesson plan. This lesson is  basic but great lesson on the Google SketchUp site (mentioned above) and I think this lesson is perfect for introducing the SketchUp software and for introducing basic geometry concepts to elementary student.

*What I think that I would change or add to this lesson is an extension that leads into an interactive final product. What I mean is that a student creates the 2D then 3D house in the first two lessons then for the third lesson the student imports .jpg formatted projects into thier SketchUp environment that were previously created in Photoshop Elements, Kid Pix, Inspiration, Comic Life. etc. I'm thinking that the projects could be themed: "All About Me Concept Web", a graphic collage, a science diagram, etc. Students would then showcase these personal projects inside their 3D house, which would then become their own personalized art show! Then for the final product, students could export their SketchUp projects as .mov files and I would then upload these files to their classroom website for all to see. I can't wait to try this out next school year.

Sample:
This is an example of a lesson that is perfect for elementary students to get exposed and accustomed to using the basics of Google 3D SketchUp. You can create numerous pages of buildings, objects, etc. in SketchUp then when the user is finished they can export their project pages as a QuickTime .mov file to share with others.... like the sample project I uploaded below.

iMovie Project: Video editing software like iMovie can be utilized to create a fun, powerful and engaging experience for both the student and the audience. A student can do this by telling a story or digital narrative. Recently my wife and I got a golden retriever puppy and the video below captures this experience.
