Grading Policies

Dear parents & students,

I hope in this post to anticipate and answer basic questions you may have as you access current grades online using the school's new PASS system.  Here goes:

Timeliness

I will update grades on PASS as soon as I can.  The school's standard is weekly; when I can, I will post more frequently.

Blanks

If there is a blank space under an assignment, it means either it has not been completed yet, or in the case of a quiz or test, the student was absent.  I do not make up quizzes; missed quizzes will not affect a student's grade.  Tests must be made up as soon as possible.

Overall grade averages

Please see the document below, which is part of the information packet I sent home at the beginning of school.  While we all follow school policy regarding Progress, Quarter, and exam grades, each teacher at Northfield High School uses a different grading formula that reflects the unique aspects of each subject and class.  Since my grading formula incorporates things like growth and effort as well as objective scores on tests, quizzes, and other assignments, an accurate daily average is impossible and potentially misleading.

In addition to the required Progress and Quarter grades, I will post current averages from time to time as seems appropriate, for example after a major test or project.  Otherwise, viewing the student's scores and completion of assignments should give a general idea of their progress.
