with Barbara Mc Owen and Terry Traub

for Fiddlers, Pianists & other Interested Parties
Sunday, June 12, 2011   1 to 3 p.m.
Beloit College, Beloit, Wisconsin

Musicians interested in techniques for playing Scottish tunes are invited to learn from two of the best! Join Boston fiddler Barbara McOwen and pianist/accordionist Terry Traub in a two-hour exploration of Scottish jigs, strathspeys, marches and slow airs. The workshop is open to musicians of all ages, levels and instruments, and will be tailored to the interests and abilities of the participants. The goal is for all to glean new information and ideas for performing the traditional dance music of Scotland.

Several tunes will be reviewed in detail, covering bowings and gracenotes, tempos, rhythms, phrasings and chord progressions, transitions between tunes, and how the tune fits in the Scottish repertoire.Techniques for enhancing a band’s sound and adding exciting dynamics for dancing will also be highlighted. Sheet music will be available, and participants will have an opportunity to play singly or in small groups.

The cost is $20. The workshop is an extension of the Midwest Scottish Weekend, a gathering of Scottish Country dancers from the Midwest and beyond. For more information, including registration form and a summary of Barbara and Terry’s experience, visit our website or contact Mady Newfield at (630) 584-0825 or folkdance@fnal.gov.
