Tickets are now available for the upcoming 5th Annual Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Banquet on Saturday October 15th at the Rockland Elks Lodge. The evening begins with a reception at 5:30 PM, Dinner at 6 PM and the Inductions at 7 PM. Prior to the Induction Ceremony, the committee will holding a silent auction that includes sports tickets, gift certificates and more.
The Class of 2011 include the late Allan Middleton, the late Gary Kenniston, David Ames, Anna Goodale, Robert Green, Scott Johnson, Darrell “Skip” Pound and Darryl Townsend.
Middleton from Vinalhaven was an outstanding pitcher and in 1932 struck out 25 of 27 batters in a game against Camden High School. Middleton went on to play for semi-pro ball before he signed a professional contract with the Boston Red Sox. Middleton’s dream to pitch in the majors was halted by World War II, as he joined the Air Force and was shot down and killed in a mission over North Africa in 1943.
Kenniston was the man responsible for establishing the Rockland Little League Program, coaching several teams as well as servicing as the league’s President, Vice President and Secretary/Treasurer. Kenniston was also the Little League District Administrator for more than 30 years and Little League fields on Old County Road in Rockland are named in his honor. Kenniston was also the Commissioner of Pee Wee Football and volunteered for many sports programs in Rockland.
Ames was 4 sport athlete at Camden High School participating in Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country and Track for the Mustangs. After High School, Ames attended the University of Maine, where he played baseball for the Black Bears from 1965-1967, going 7-0 during those 3 years at Maine. Ames is one of the top basketball officials in Maine, having officiated over 2,000 varsity high school and college games and for the past 20 years has been the Site Supervisors of Officials at the Eastern Maine Tournament in Bangor.
Goodale from Camden, was an average high school athlete but found her calling while attending Syracuse University when she began rowing in 2001. Goodale was a 4-year member of the Women’s Crew team, where she was a Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association All- American. Goodale was then named to the U.S. Rowing team and was 4-time member of the National team and the 2008 Olympic Team. Goodale, who was part of the 8-member rowing squad, won Gold Medals at the 08 Olympics in Beijing, at the 2007 and 08 World Cup and at the 2006 and 07 World Championships, as well as a Silver Medal at the 2006 World Cup.
Green was an outstanding multiple sport coach at both Waldoboro and Medomak Valley High Schools and led the Panthers Baseball team to the 1970 Class B State Championship. Green also won 4 Knox Lincoln League baseball championships at WHS and MVHS. He also led the Waldoboro Girls basketball team to a 34 game winning streak, led 4 different cross country teams to K-L titles, coached 2 Waldoboro High Boys basketball teams to tournament appearance and coached the Medomak Valley Wrestling team to its first win. Green, who was selected the 1971 Maine High School Baseball Coach of the Year, was also the first Athletic Director at Medomak Valley.
Johnson is regarded by many as one of the finest athletes to ever come out of Georges Valley
High School. The Thomaston native was a 4-year starter for the Buccaneers soccer, basketball and baseball, where he holds the school record for goals scored and is second all-time in points scored on the hardwood. Johnson scored 105 goals and led the Buccaneers to the 1980 and 81 Class C State Championships, and was named a 4-time All State Soccer player and All New England in 1981. Johnson started every basketball game during his 4 years at GVHS, scoring more than 1,500 points including a school record 47 points in one game. Johnson was also selected the Georges Valley Male Student Athlete of the Year all 4 years he was high school.
Pound was a 4-sport athlete at Rockport High School, participating in basketball, baseball, cross country and track and field all 4 years at RHS. Pound was a member of Rockport’s 1961 Western Maine Championship basketball team, and was selected to the All Tournament Team. Pound twice qualified was States in Cross Country and was the top scorer at the 1962 Knox Lincoln Track Championships. Pound was also a standout at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, where he took part in soccer, basketball and baseball all 4 years in the school, being selected the UMPI Male Athlete 3 times and being elected to the school’s Hall of Fame. Pound then spent 30 years at Lyndon State College in Vermont, where coached soccer and baseball for 26 years, basketball for 12 years and was the school’s long time Athletic Director, and in 1995 was inducted into the Lyndon State Hall of Fame.
Townsend was a 3 sports star at Georges Valley High School, playing soccer, basketball and baseball, including being part of the Buccaneers’ Class C State Championship teams in 1981. In 1984, Townsend was named the Georges Valley Male Student Athlete of the Year. He then attended the University of Maine at Farmington where he was a 4-year member of the Beavers soccer squad, including playing for the nationally ranked squad in 1986. For the last 16 years, Townsend was the girls soccer coach at Georges Valley, finishing with a record of 192-40-28, including winning 65 straight regular season games. During that time period his Buccaneers won 11 Mountain Valley Conference and /or Division Championships, the Western Maine Class C Title in 1999 and 2009 and the State Championship in 2009. Townsend has been named MVC Coach of the Year 5 times and Maine Coach of the Year in 2009.
The Hall will also name its Male and Female Midcoast High School Student Athlete of the Year for 2011 during the banquet. The five female finalists are Kasey Benner of Medomak Valley, Paige Bradshaw of Rockland, Marnie Merrill of Camden Hills, Natasha Seavey from Rockland and Alanna Vose from Medomak Valley. September 19, 2011 FMI: Contact Don Shields, (207) 485-6907 The Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame has announced the 5 male and 5 female finalists for the Hall’s 2011 High School Athlete of the Year.The finalists were recently selected by the Midcoast Hall of Fame’s Board of Directors after considering a number of student athletes for the honor. The five male finalists include Isaac Durkee of Medomak Valley, Kyle Durkee of Medomak Valley, Bryant Matthews of Georges Valley, Tyler McFarland of Camden Hills and Lucas Morrill of Rockland. The five female finalists are Kasey Benner of Medomak Valley, Paige Bradshaw of Rockland, Marnie Merrill of Camden Hills, Natasha Seavey from Rockland and Alanna Vose from Medomak Valley. High Schools from within the Midcoast area (Rockland, Camden Hills, Medomak Valley, Georges Valley, Vinalhaven, North Haven and Islesboro) were asked to nominate 2 male and 2 female student- of-year athlete candidates. The candidates were asked to complete a questionnaire and return it to the board to be considered for the honor. Those candidates who were nominated by their school but failed to complete the questionnaire were not considered for the award. Issac Durkee, who recently graduated from Medomak Valley, was a member of the Panthers Soccer, Basketball and Baseball teams including a 4 year starter for Medomak’s Baseball team and a 4 year member of the Panthers’ Basketball team that played each year at the Bangor Auditorium. Durkee was KVAC All Academic for all 3 sports as well as being named a first team All Star in Basketball, Team MVP in Soccer and Coaches Award winner for Baseball. Kyle Durkee, Issac’s twin brother and also a June graduate from Medomak Valley, was a two-year member of the Panthers’ Varsity Golf and Basketball teams and a 3-year member of the Baseball squad. Durkee helped lead the Panthers golf to team to the school’s first ever KVAC Championship in 2009 and was part of a pair of Basketball teams that qualified for the Eastern Maine Tournament. Durkee won the Coaches Award for both Golf and Basketball and twice was named Medomak’s “Most Improved” Baseball player. This June, Kyle was named the winner of Medomak Valley’s “Senior Sportsmanship Award”. Matthews, who graduated this past June from Georges Valley, was a 4 year member of the Buccaneer Varsity Soccer and Baseball teams. Matthews, who helped soccer team to the 2009 playoffs, was named the team’s MVP, 1st team all Mountain Valley Conference and played in the Maine Senior Bowl. For the Baseball squad, Matthews was twice the team’s MVP, was a 2010 first team All Mountain Valley Conference team member. An All Academic Conference selection as well, Matthews was named the Georges Valley Male Student Athlete of the Year this past June. McFarland, who in the spring graduated from Camden Hills, helped lead the Windjammers to the 2009 and 2011 State Championship and was also a 2010 member of Camden Hills’ Eastern Maine Championship squad, as the Windjammers finished with a 63-3 record during that 3 year span. Tyler was named the KVAC Player of the Year in 2010 and 11 as well as a First Team All State player both season as well as named the 2011 Mr. Maine Basketball. During in 2011 McFarland was named the Maine Gatorade Basketball Player of the Year, Rockland Elks Mid Coast Basketball Player of the Year and Camden Hill Regional High School Athlete of the Year. Morrill, who graduated in June from Rockland, played varsity of Soccer, Basketball and Baseball for the Tigers. In Soccer, Morrill was twice named 2nd team All KVAC and was awarded with the Coach’s Award his senior year. In Basketball , Morrill help lead Rockland to 3 straight tournament appearances including helping the Tigers advance to the 2009 Eastern Maine Finals. But it was in the baseball field where Morrill had his greatest success, where the 4 year starter was named All KVAC 2nd team his freshman year, and 1st team all conference the next 3 seasons and helped power the Tigers to the 2011 baseball playoffs. Morrill received a Baseball Scholarship from the University of Maine and has begun his Division One career with the Black Bears. Benner, who graduated this spring from Medomak Valley, was a member of the Panthers Soccer, Basketball and Softball teams, was most successful on the Softball field where she was a 1st team KVAC All Star twice and was named the team’s MVP this past spring and the winner of the Coach’s Award in 2010. Benner also won the Coach’s Award for Basketball her senior year and was named a member of the 2011 KVAC All Academic team. Bradshaw attended Searsport High School for her Freshman and Sophomore years and played Varsity Soccer, Basketball and Baseball for the Vikings before transferring to Rockland for her Junior season, where she suffered a severe knee injury during the soccer season. Bradshaw rehabbed her knee and was able to play Soccer and Softball for Rockland her senior year, and was selected as the winner of the Coach’s Award for the Soccer and was chosen the winner of the Holmes Athlete of the Year Award. Merrill, who in the spring graduated from Camden Hills, was a member of the Windjammers Soccer, Alpine Ski and Lacrosse teams, earning KVAC All-Academic honors in all sports, and received the Charles and Ruth Stratton Memorial Scholarship in recognition of her efforts and commitment to CHRHS Athletics. . Seavey, a June graduate of Rockland, lettered 4-years as a member of the Tigers Varsity Tennis team and was named the winner of the Coach’s Award her Junior Season and this spring helped lead the Tigers to their first playoff appearance in 7 years. Seavey was also a member of the Rockland Cheering squad in 2008 that finished second in the KVAC. Vose, who just began her Senior year at Medomak Valley, is a member of the Soccer, Basketball and Softball teams. Vose was named MVP of the Soccer team her junior year as well as a KVAC 1st team All-Star. On the hardwood, Vose has helped the Panthers to 3 straight Eastern Maine Tournaments, including advancing to the regional Championship game this past February. Vose has twice been named a KVAC 2nd team All Star and the team’s MVP her Sophomore year. The 2010 winners of the Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame Athletes of the Year were Danielle Frye of Georges Valley and Tyler McFarland of Camden Hills. The Male and Female High School Athlete of the Year will be named during the Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame Annual Banquet on Saturday October 15th at the Rockland Elks Lodge. During that night, Dave Ames, Anna Goodale, Robert Green, Scott Johnson, Darrell “Skip” Pound, Darryl Townsend as well as the late Gary Kenniston and the late Allan Middleton will all be inducted as part of the 2010 Hall of Fame Class. The

High Schools from within the Midcoast area (Rockland, Camden Hills, Medomak Valley, Georges Valley, Vinalhaven, North Haven and Islesboro) were asked to nominate 2 male and 2 female student- of-year athlete candidates. Gartley, who recently graduated from Camden Hills, was a member of the Windjammers Football, Basketball and Baseball teams including playing for the Camden Hills 2009 State Championship Basketball team. Meklin, who graduated in June from Rockland, played varsity of Football, Basketball and Baseball for the Tigers and was awarded the Scholar Athlete Award from the Maine Interscholastic Athletic Administrators’ Association. Young, who graduated this past June, was a 4 year Varsity Member of Rockland’s Football, Indoor and Outdoor Track teams, serving as a Football captain and representing the Tigers in the Annual Shrine Lobster Bowl Senior All Star Game. Cooper, a senior at North Haven High School, has already played 4 years of Varsity Basketball for the Hawks, being named her team’s MVP in 2010. She has also taken part on the Crew and Track and Field squads. Frye, who graduated in June, was a 4 time MVP of the Softball team, helping to lead the Bucs to 2 State Championship. She also played Varsity Basketball and Soccer teams, including the 2009 Soccer State Championship Squad. Kinney, a recent graduate, was a 4-year member of the Tigers Varsity Soccer and Basketball teams, serving a captain for both. She also played Varsity Softball and was the RDHS Holmes Athlete of the Year. McCluskey, a June graduate, was a member of the Windjammers Swim, Cross Country and Track and Field teams, was MVP for all 3 squads and 28th place in the 50-yard freestyle at the YMCA Swimming National Championships. Smeaton, who graduated this past spring, played Varsity Basketball and Soccer as well as ran Track for the Windjammers, was won numerous awards including being named KVAC All Academic team for all 3 sports. The Male and Female High School Athlete of the Year will be named during the Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame Annual Banquet on Saturday October 16th at the Rockland Elks Lodge. During that night, Jeff Hart, Bob Brown, Dean Erickson, Carroll LaHaye and the late Bob Morrill will all be inducted as part of the 2010 Hall of Fame Class. The Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame will induct 5 new members to its Hall during the 4th annual induction ceremony and banquet on Saturday Night, October 16th at the Rockland Elks Lodge. The 2010 inductees include the late Bob Morrill, Jeff Hart, Carroll LaHaye, Bob Brown and Dean Erickson.
Morrill, taught and coached at Rockland District High School for 39 years, leading the Tigers Baseball squad to the 1989 Class B State, the only in the school’s history. Morrill also coached Varsity Football and Varsity and JV Basketball during his career at RDHS. Morrill attended High School in Farmington, where he lettered in Football, Basketball, Baseball, Track and Skiing, and then attended Farmington Teachers’ College where he played baseball. The Baseball Field in Rockland is named after Morrill, who died in 1997.
Hart has led the Windjammers basketball program since 1983 and is closing in on his 400th career victory. Hart has led Camden-Rockport and Camden Hills to 397 wins and coaching in 23 Eastern Maine Class B Tournaments, capturing 8 Eastern Maine Crowns and 5 State Championships (99, 01, 02, 05 and 09), including going undefeated twice. Hart’s teams have also won 11 KVAC Championships and he has been named Coach of the Year twice in his career. Hart attended Mt. Blue High School in Farmington playing for long time coach Jim Bessey and attended the University of Maine. Hart, who is also the Varsity Baseball Coach at Camden Hills, was named to the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009.
LaHaye, 1973 graduate from Medomak Valley High School has made her mark in College Basketball. LaHaye attended the University of Maine at Machias, where the school retiring her basketball number. In 1982, LaHaye was named the Women’s Basketball Coach at Randolph-Macon in Ashland, Virginia, where she has won 471 games during her 28 seasons, which currently ranks 15th all-time in the history of NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball. LaHaye’s Yellow Jackets have had 18 straight winning seasons, have won 7 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Regular Season Championships, 6 ODAC Tournament Championships and have gone to 8 NCAA Division III Tournaments. LaHaye has taken Randolph-Macon to the Sweet 16 four times, to the Elite 8 twice and led her 2005 squad lost the National Championship game.
Bob Brown is one of the most respected basketball coaches in Maine, winning 583 games over a 40 high school and college seasons, including coaching basketball at Rockland District High School from 1968 through 1974, during which time he led 4 teams to the Eastern Maine Class A Tournament. Brown also served as the Tigers’ Athletic Director and Golf Coach. Brown also coached at Belgrade, Williams (Oakland), South Portland, Edward Little, Bonny Eagle and Cheverus High Schools, leading 28 teams to the high school tournament, winning 6 Western Maine
Championship and 4 Gold Balls (79 and 80 at South Portland; 08 and 10 at Cheverus). Brown also won 142 college games at St. Anselm, University of Southern Maine and Boston University.
Dean Erickson was a standout point guard for Art Dyer’s Medomak Valley teams in the mid 1970s, and he helped lead the Panthers to the 1975 and 1977 Class B State Championship games, winning the Gold Ball in 1977. Erickson scored 594 points and handed out 375 assists during his career at Medomak Valley, with the Panthers going 65-7 during that time period. Erickson was named to the Bangor Daily News’ First Team All State Basketball Team in 1977. Erickson continued his basketball career at Brown University, playing 3 seasons for the Ivy League School. During 1981 season, Erickson had 6 steals in a game against Dartmouth, which still ranks 3rd all-time for a game in Brown History.
The Hall will also name its Male and Female Midcoast High School Student Athlete of the Year for 2010 during the banquet.
