December Update
Last month, the Student Association of Michigan (SAM) met at Saginaw Valley State University for what turned out to be an eye-opening and productive session. We were honored to host State Representative Ken Horn and State Senator Roger Kahn, who graciously spent their afternoon with us, discussing key issues. Both gentlemen alluded to – and confirmed our fears of – an alarming lack of vision and substantive planning in Lansing as a whole on ways for Michigan to build and innovate its way out of the current crisis we face as a state.

That’s why SAM is gearing up for action.

At Saginaw, we solidified plans for a massive, two-pronged response to the decades-long trend of Michigan’s disinvestment in higher education, culminating with the broken MI Promise Scholarship. First will be a mobilization of Michigan students in Lansing, where we will voice our frustration and take student participation in the political process to a new level.  Second is a substantive policy proposal that SAM will assemble with students and organizations of all stripes from across Michigan, offering specific strategies for reinvesting in higher education as a way to provide much needed economic growth right now and in the future.

We hope you will join us as we help students take part in the fight to reinvigorate our state. For more information on how you can get involved with us, email me at jdtwardy@umich.edu.
