9-Ball League News 5/21

League News and Info

Session 2, 2012 is now in the 2nd half with week 8 of 12 complete.

This week we had a first ever double frozen lag in the match between Tim Ringer and Chuck Early.

Tim Ringer, a.k.a. The Billiard Supply Guy, has offered to supply awards for frozen lags in the 9-ball league.  Record your frozen lag on the score sheet and get an immediate selection from a misc grab bag of shooting gloves, pocket chalkers, cue holders, bridges, tip tools etc.

The league Policies and Procedures committee has approved a change to set a minimum SL on players equal to two levels below the highest level attained in the last two years.  This change is effective 2/28/11.  The committee is also considering a policy for declaring a team's 4 person roster before the start of match 2.

Your input on league changes are welcome by contacting anyone on the committee or through the "Contact Us" link on the left.

Beginning with the summer session in July we changed the method for calculating skill level changes.  The previous 20/40 three match method was replaced by a 27/53 four match rule.
The MPLA has an e-mail distribution list to communicate league information before it hits the Newsletter.  If you would like to be added to this list click on Contact Us  and send your request.

The MPLA welcomes anyone to shoot as a sub when the need exists.  The sooner you let someone know you are available to play the better your chance of seeing action.  Feel free to use the "Contact Us" navigation selection to reserve a spot or to let us know you are available.

Shooting directly at an object ball that is less than the width of a piece of chalk from the cue ball is usually considered a double hit foul in the MPLA.  Shooting directly at an object ball frozen to the cue ball is a legal shot.  Click on "Video" for a demonstration.

RMHC Benefit

MPLA League Players Special Announcement!!!

As a supporter of the RMHC the MPLA pool league asks that you consider donating in whatever way you can to the 2012 fund raising effort.  For information go to www.olinikcharities.com or contact Jerry Olinik on any league night.  We appreciate everything Jerry does for our league and are glad for the opportunity to reciprocate his generosity.

The third annual fund raising effort to benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Ann Arbor will be held on June 9th, 2012 at Cleary University's Johnson Center.  This year’s event “Spring Swing Extravaganza” will be a combination of a dinner dance with entertainment provided by the Rhythm Society Orchestra. There will be both silent and live auctions of items donated by many Detroit sports teams, the University of Michigan, as well as many items from businesses located in, Livingston, Washtenaw, and Oakland Counties.

The function Ronald McDonald House is to be a temporary sanctuary for families of critically ill children to stay for as long as their children are in the hospital. The house charges a $10 donation per night, only if the families can afford to pay. Families stay as long as they need to and the house is typically 97% occupied. The houses rely on contributions and grants and the generosity of the general public to sustain operations.

You can help in more ways than one... either elect to be a major sponsor, table sponsor, you can purchase advertising space, or you can purchase tickets to the event.

League Tournaments

The first MPLA Art Fields Memorial 9-ball tournament was held October 23, 2011, at the U of M Billiard Room.  We had 12 players in a DE race to 5/4 that paid the top three finishers.  The top three were:

1st Place - Ian Joyce ($100)
2nd Place - Bill Nagel ($50)
3rd Place - Steve Crutchfield ($30)

In addition to his 1st place money Ian will receive a plaque with an engraved nameplate showing he won the 2011 event.  We hope this is the first of many annual tournaments in Art's honor.

Special thanks to tournament director, Gail Reinert, who did an outstanding job and to Patti Hodge for providing a great music selection during the tournament.
