Michigan Deaf Health Fair

The 2008 Deaf Health Fair was a SUCCESS!



Many thanks to the Michigan Association for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (MADHH), Madonna University, Michigan Deaf Communities, professional interpreters, and Sign Language students for the first ever Deaf Health Fair in Michigan on October 11.  Here are some notable highlights:

  • Presenters included a Deaf MD Dr. Michael McKee from New York,  Deaf Audiologist Dr. Samuel Atcherson from Arkansas, Deaf Lawyer Susan Gonzalez JD from California, Deaf Psychologist Mel Whalen, Deaf Dentist Dr. Amit Batra, Deaf Nutritionist Sandria Graham

  • Thank you to so many Madonna folks who devoted much time prior to the event and all day Saturday Oct 11, thank you to Danny McDougall, Michael Meldrum, Celia Sharpe, Stephanie Beatty, Sue Hasenau, Greg Conklin, Jeff Fleshner

  • Thank you to Karen Schmitz, Patria DeGuia, Teresa Thompson, Nancy Kostin, Dave Hammerschmidt, Dorothy Cauzillo, Pat Derry, Carol Fox, Emma Kent

  • The co-directors, Christa Roy from the University of Michigan Hospital and Dave Coyne from Michigan Association of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Agency in Lansing both devoted more than 500 hours each to the project, Mel Whalen a Deaf Psychologist invested more than 200 hours within the past year

  • 400 Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Hearing people were in attendance

  • Deaf panel on Diabetes, Carpal Tunnel, HIV/AIDS, Addictions

  • 8 medical workshops (totaling 14 hours) were offered during the day

  • 80+ health screenings taken

  • 50 flu shots

  • Dental Screenings

  • MU Nursing Student Association assisted with 4 volunteers for glucose, blood pressure, weight screenings

  • University of Michigan School of Dentistry provided 8 volunteers

  • 25 professional interpreters from numerous agencies around the state donated $3,250 worth of interpreting services

  • 4 captionists donated $945.00 worth of captioning services

  • Sign language students from Michigan State University, Lansing Community College, Oakland Community College, Mott Community College, Baker College who volunteered their time and talents all day

  • Gold Sponsors ($3,000.00 level) included University of Michigan Health Systems, Michigan Association for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (MADHS), Screenline, and Madonna University (in-kind services)

  • Silver Sponsors ($1,000.00 level) included Sorenson Communications, Deaf Community Advocacy Network, and Advance Bionics

  • Bronze Sponsors ($500.00 level) included Beaumont Hospitals, Cochlear America, John Niparko, MD, Med-El Corporation

  • 17 vendors bought $150.00 tables including the University of Rochester Medical Center, New York

  • Free healthy lunches from Mr. Pita for the first 250 registrants

  • Free t-shirts for all participants, volunteers

  • NO COST to any of the 400 people  who attended
