I facilitate retreats, worskshops and seminars that address a variety of topics in psychology, spirituality and Christianity. Below are some recent programs I have led. I can bring one of these programs to your group, or design something specific for your community and situation. The Spirituality of BaptismMarch 19, 2007 Pacific School of ReligionThis workshop was for seminary students from a worship course at the Pacific School of Religion. We disussed the relationship between liturgy and spirituality, reviewed the history of Christian initiation in its various permutations, and examined the spiritual implications of infant baptism and adult baptism. We finished the workshop in the baptistry, in which participants had an opportunity to practice baptism by immersion. Real Religion for Real PeopleNovember 10-12, 2006 Christ Church of PeaceThis vital congregation was on the cusp of taking a new step in their growth. Their pastor wanted a church wide retreat to prepare for their efforts. I provided psycho-education, facilitated small groups, designed special worship and liturgy and preached in their Sunday service. We reflected on authentic spirituality and discipleship, and cultural and psychological variables that interfere with an authentic relationship with God and with others. Scaling the Walls that Divide Us: Overcoming Heterosexism to Create Genuine CommunityJune 17, 2006 Coalition of Welcoming CongregationsThis seminar focused on the various types of invisible, unearned privilege assoiciated with skin color, gender, class and sexual orientation, highlighting the spiritual and psychological consequences for individuals and faith communities. Small group exercises and conversation allowed participants to explore the impact of invisible privilege in their own communities. Reconciling JourneyAugust 12-14 West End United Methodist ChurchWest End UMC used my book, Reconciling Journey, as an evangelism tool to reach unchurch people in the community. They then invited me to lead a retreat for existing church members as well as new visitors from their evangelism efforts. Through psycho-education, bible study and small groups we examined the use of religious imagery to engender shame as a means of social control. In liturgy and worship we sought God's grace to free us from shame and reconcile us with God through Christ. God's BelovedFebruary 14, 2004 University Christian Church of BerkeleyA workshop for LGBT people to learn about God's love and grace for all people.
