Monastery of Christ in the Desert
|
| At least once a year since 1997, I have made a private retreat at Christ in the Desert. This is a relatively new monastery and is located in the high desert of northwest New Mexico next to the Chama river. They keep the entire Rule of Benedict. A women's community, Our Lady of the Desert, is a few hundred yards up the valley. Both communities are members of the Subiaco congregation. This year I took videos of the guesthouse, the chapel, a small office (terce), and the refectory. In addition to the Eucharist, the community says seven offices: Vigils, Lauds, none, sext, terce, Vespers, Compline. None, sext, and terce are the small offices, and this video is of terce (which occurs around 3:30 p.m. I hope this video gives you a small taste of what it is like to spend eight days on a private retreat with Benedictine monks.
