This morning,
a damp fog drifts across the road,
as teenagers in loose-fitting clothes
drift across the lawns toward the bus stop.
swallowed in the gray light.
The rain has picked up during the night,
filling the ditches and washes with clear water.
A plastic straw floats along,
bent, dirty,
slowly moving down
toward the bus stop
toward the woods and the lake.
All morning long now,
tiny damp frogs jitter across the roads and lawns,
ducking teenagers,
still slow from the cold night.
Stepping back and watching low,
you can see hundreds of them,
moving over the grass like bugs,
all headed in the general direction
of the woods and the lake. |
