Like most chess players I am somewhat obsessed with mine and other people's rating. Whilst not a perfect representation of somebody's strength* they are the best we have.
I'm not a fan of online ratings - there are just too many cheats and inflated gradings - so they won't be printed here.
"Chess requires a wide range of skills, for example pattern recognition, vigilance, logic, concentration,
time-management, winning with grace, losing with dignity and coping with stress."
Grades
My current ECF/BCF rapid-play grades are 123 (ELO 1634) for standard play and 111 (ELO 1538) for rapid play. My ECF profile can be found here.
Tournaments
- I won the 2007 Tournoi de Amitié ELO 1300 and under category, with 4.5/7 - many games played against higher rated players. I won the trophy shown below.
- Not a great showing at the 2008 Manchester Chess Federation Championship, only scoring 2/6, in the strong ECF 120 (ELO 1850) and under category.
- A strong start (2.5/3) but week finish on the higher boards left me with 3.5/6 at the end of the 2008 Atherton Chess Championship, in the ECF 91 (ELO 1378) and under category. I feel I should've finished with 4.5 after two solid positions were thrown away, pushing for a win rather than taking the draw - lesson learnt!
- I scored 3/6 in the 14th Bury Rapidplay Tournament in the under ECF 105 (1490) jointly winning the Grading Prize for best score of my grading category.
- Better than last year, but a little disappointing, I scored 3/6 in ECF 120 (ELO 1610) and under category of the 2009 Manchester Chess Federation Championship. A very well attended event where I played t3e majority of my games against higher rated opponents and felt that I made too many mistakes in my openings.
- A good showing at the 2009 Bolton Rapidplay, scoring 4/6, where 5 of my 6 opponents had higher grades than me in the 140 and under category. This allowed me to win the Grading Prize, for under 125 rated players.
- My best to date, scoring 5/6 in the under ECF 120 (ELO 1610) category of the 2010 Manchester Chess Federation Championship. I came 2nd winning a cash prize and the trophy shown below!

I also play in the Manchester Chess League and Bolton District Chess League. In 2009 one of my teams, Worsley 3, won the Hartley Trophy. I played in every round except one and had a perfect score of 3/3.
Future Chess Plans
I will be playing in the Manchester and Bolton District Chess Leagues throughout 2009-10, with my local chess club, Worsley. I've two rapidplays coming up in the lead up to Christmas.
